Help! Found a poor chicken that fell off a poultry truck

Have you given her electrolytes or sugar water for shock? If you don't have electrolytes you can mix some up. Just put 1 tsp sugar and a pinch each of table salt and baking soda in a cup of warm water. Use a measuring spoon and measuring cup. Stir till all is dissolved. Put some in a small cup and gently dip her beak in but don't get it in her nostrils. If she won't drink any, you can put a drop on your finger and put it in the crease of her beak, again being careful not to get any in her nostrils. A dehydrated chicken can't eat so try to get her drinking.

I was driving and found poor chicken on the side of the road on some grass. It looks like she’s wounded but it’s not infected. I have chickens of my own and want to take her home. I know I’ll have to keep her separated from the flock for a while but any other tips. Do you guys think she’ll make it?
I actually followed a post a few weeks ago on Facebook about this exact thing.

You'll want to be very careful how you feed her, she’s been genetically engineered to be too heavy to walk by 8 weeks. I believe these meat chickens are Cornish cross and their lives are not great in the chicken industry. I read several folks saying that they can have a decent life as long as she doesn’t get too heavy for her own legs.

As I told the woman who rescued that one, it at least deserves a chance, it escaped and is owed that. Let her enjoy some outside time, good foods and lots of loves! Any additional days are more than she was destined for.

Chicken distribution system has chosen you!

Hello all!
This is so sad! But I have recently seen so many similar stories regarding animals that have been escaped from the commercial industry holocaust. I found this post while looking for something else and want to help.

She looks like she needs a pick-me-up & TLC (she is too pale).
  1. I always give a warm Epsom soak (the salt magnesium improves blood circulation) and towel dry her.
  2. Take the time throughout the day to slowly syringe 3ml potent honey water into her beak. I do this all the time, but you need to be careful not to aspirate her, do -2drops @ a time at the tip of beak.
  3. Place her in a tote with a lot of soft, cushiony litter, like straw or old towels somewhere warm, or with a heat lamp if you have one.
  4. Allow access to probiotic water or add some crushed garlic:)

Cjcyndi, I have three Cornish broiler recues, and a commercial turkey also. They are currently five years old because I didn't listen when everyone told me they would die, simply from their breeds liability to have heart attacks, overweight, they'll "starve if ya dont feed'em all they can eat".

I say, whatever. They deserve to try, and I will give them that chance. I am dedicated to raising awareness about the reality of factory-farmed animals. And after researching and helping in the efforts to end this crap, I still can't believe how many people are uninformed about this kind of animal-agriculture-gone-bad.
If others knew, they wouldn't support these atrocities.

Understand these animals were genetically mutilated. We have designed their genes to betray their own body into outgrowing the strength to upright themselves, so the income is quicker. These animals are killed when they are equivalent to the suffering of a 100lb 8year-old. They are killed at a young age. Its science, culturally acceptable, legal, and let's not forget it's also inhuman?

I vegetarian for ethical reasons. Please don't consume these chickens but then reply that you don't believe it's right to abuse lesser individuals, the mentally impaired, children or animals.
Change it or choose it folks. Thats life. I believe it is not right to do this to any animal. Plus eating dead bodies is disgusting.

The GOOD NEWS is they don't have to die for it. My recues and other chickens all live together, free ranged. They are solid, not fat. Just don't allow free-choice feed and give unlimited greens and forage. My turkey for petes sakes, can roost on my chickens' perch 5ft up! I have recently been giving them herbal joint supplements, but they were fine without, so it's just something I want to do for them...

Good Luck Cicyndi!

*I hope this reminds people that this is what happens to the unseen ones in factory farms and maybe inspire others to stand against this!

What do you think lions do? Chickens eat dead animals all the time. The meat/egg industry is horrible and disgusting, and I hate it, but eating meat isn't a crime. I usually eat plant-based foods, but eating other animals is natural, not disgusting. I wish people could just let the animals live a real life, then kill them, not force them into a terrible life they don't deserve and kill them so young. Again, though, snakes eat rats, lions eat gazelles, sharks eat seals, penguins eat fish, and it's not "disgusting".

I think she can make it, with the proper care. They are bred to be killed very young, but they can survive. She will probably want to eat a lot, but monitor her feeding, as she can overeat easily. Good luck to you and your chicken!

Would you rather we eat them alive?

Just like many other species on this planet, humans are omnivores.

I am all for respecting their needs and providing a good and species-appropriate life so the animals we keep can enjoy their time while it lasts.

And to avoid causing stress and fear, we will pick them from the roosts at night one by one for butchering.
While cradling them in one arm and talking to them in a low and soothing tone, the other arm performs a blow to the back of their head which leaves them unconcious and the head will be chopped off immediately.

As our chickens are used to being handled regularly at night for health inspections, they usually don't even really wake up before they are already gone.
