Last Friday (9 days ago) I was outside playing with my new puppy when a teeny little duckling (research I've done makes me pretty sure its a wood duckling) came running through the grass, into our driveway. Our older dog started chasing it so my mom picked it up to save it. We live on a farm in southern Alberta, within 5 miles of a provincial park, where birds, geese and ducks are regulars. We searched around for other ducklings or signs of mom, with no luck. I set up a brooder box, and have read as much as I can find on how to care for the little thing (whom I've named Bubbles lol) Baby is pretty glued to me already, so from what I've read, there's little hope I could release when its older. Right now he's on a duck starter, and I also catch insects (eww) to give him some protein. Along with that, I make sure he gets grass, dandelions and the occasional small bit of fruit, finely chopped. He's grown quite a bit already, and seems very content. My question is just, since I've never had any experience with ducks or chickens, if there's any info anyone could give me to make me a good duck mom, and help me provide him with a good home? Anything I should be prepared for, anything at all, really. Just info from people that have done this is much appreciated! Thanks!
