Last Friday (9 days ago) I was outside playing with my new puppy when a teeny little duckling (research I've done makes me pretty sure its a wood duckling) came running through the grass, into our driveway. Our older dog started chasing it so my mom picked it up to save it. We live on a farm in southern Alberta, within 5 miles of a provincial park, where birds, geese and ducks are regulars. We searched around for other ducklings or signs of mom, with no luck. I set up a brooder box, and have read as much as I can find on how to care for the little thing (whom I've named Bubbles lol) Baby is pretty glued to me already, so from what I've read, there's little hope I could release when its older. Right now he's on a duck starter, and I also catch insects (eww) to give him some protein. Along with that, I make sure he gets grass, dandelions and the occasional small bit of fruit, finely chopped. He's grown quite a bit already, and seems very content. My question is just, since I've never had any experience with ducks or chickens, if there's any info anyone could give me to make me a good duck mom, and help me provide him with a good home? Anything I should be prepared for, anything at all, really. Just info from people that have done this is much appreciated! Thanks!:D

Seems like you're feeding him well! All I can say is I hope he doesn't get too used to living as a domestic, because if you are going to let him go, he has to know what he's doing. This sounds like a terrible thing, and people will say that I'm wrong, but I'd keep him!

Well if you were in the states it would be illegel to keep it if ti is a wood duck. I don't know the laws up there so you might want to just check.
It will be fully grown within 6-8 weeks.

I spoke with our local fish and wildlife, and was told his chances of survival were very slim, and was encouraged to see what I can do. I didn't find anything after a quick Google search, so I sure hope I'm not breaking any laws! LOL.Its pretty easy to see I'm mom, and took him in with full intentions to keep him. He's still growing like a weed and I've started filling the tub with water and watching him swim :) I am also wondering, someone mentioned giving him gravel to help with digestion. I picked some up today, from a friend with parrots, I don't know what's 'brand' it is, if there are even multiple types, or how much to give. Do I mix it in his food or leave a pile he can pick at as he pleases? I'm totally out of my element here, but eager to learn what he needs. Anyone tried the diapers I've read about? All this pooping is unbelievable! LOL. But hearing him start chirping when he hears us get up is pretty awesome!

Get a diaper. Its easier if you have him inside. See if any zoos want him. Theres a zoo somewhere that has mandarins so i think they would take your little guy....wait---is it a male or female?

Oh Keep him, get a licence!! As the official told you, he'd not do fine without you, as you are his momma!!! XD Pics please!!

Sorry for the double post, continue the insect diet, it does wonders!!! XD You may also try finely chopped meat and greens soaked in curd (probiotics). Claps for being a good momma!!
