I realize that you live in a sandy area but they really do need greens. That's probably not what killed them but it will cause dietary issues that can weaken them. Our geese can completely destroyed all the greens in their pen so we let them out to forage but we also purchase greens at Walmart to feed them. I know that its costly but they really do need it. We buy 3 lb bags of greens at Walmart for $3.86 and supplement them with that.
We're also growing greens specifically for them in the ground and in containers. I know ground planting would be difficult for you with the sandy soil but you could definitely do container gardening.
