HELP**Graphic PHOTOS of Gangrene CHICKEN FEET

I'll call my vet...see if she can amputate the toes...if the antibiotic does not work. I'm wondering if maybe he broke a bone or something and it's just catching up with him??

Not to be gross or anything, but do they smell like badly infected or rotting flesh? It looks like they're oozing so I'd imagine they have a bad odor too - ?? If so, I'd talk to the vet about having those dead parts taken off ASAP. At least, as of now anyway, there are a couple of toes per foot that look healthy.

FYI: DE will NOT take care of the mites! DE is a preventative, not a cure!!! I'm now dealing with an amputation issue myself.....

It is gonna take longer than 24 hrs on antibiotics to see a difference and the feet will probley get worse before they get better. I would give the antibiotics atleast 7 day's to work. If the toes are indeed dead then I would have them removed. He still has enough foot left to walk on.

As for the mites, I would use Ivomec Eprinex. I have used this many time and it works great. I wish you an your little man the best of luck!!

This link has a picture of toes that fell off chickens due to scaly leg mites. Sure looks like the same part of the toes as your chicken's to me.

Okay, this sounds gross, but does it smell bad? If it's gangrene it should smell really really bad.
Poor roo boy

It does not smell bad...which is why I think he has some sort of circulation problem. Doc said no to frost bite....and the mites have been treated with poultry dust, DE, and I'm going to get the Ivomec too. I do not think they have leg mites.....the bugs look like LICE believe it or not and the eggs are concentrated on the feathers like mites and lice usually do. DH accidently bought hay instead of straw....and I think that may be where the lice is from.

Thanks all for your posts and counsel for my poor roo!

Please don't be so quick to remove the toes. I had a hen given to me with a similar situation. After much TLC, she is fine and has been for many years. She is very old now. I really don't know how old she is but she is the best mother hen I've ever owned. Be patient and keep up the good care.
