HELP**Graphic PHOTOS of Gangrene CHICKEN FEET

And he will still have enough foot to walk on and everything...if only he were a silkie then he would have some extras lol .

I've just picked up on your discussion. I have two chickens whose toes are heading the direction of yours. My rooster got a good case of bumblefoot on one foot. after 9 days on antibiotics, the swelling came way down and the gangrenous color has gone away, but now two of his toes appear to be dying and look much like your pictures. We're trying to decide if we should put him down because I'm doubtful he can get around on one toe. Then I have a hen and she's got two infected toes, one on each foot. Its a long story, but it started with wounds to the tops of them, and now that the toes are very swollen it looks like she's down to the bone. The vet says she'll require amputating them but that she can get around fine without those toes. Her toes look very much like your pictures too...

Mine started at the nail beds ON THE TOP of the foot too! The nail beds turned blood red....it was strange. I think he broke something jumping down from the 10+ foot rafters in our coop. Vet did not think it was bumble foot....I've seen bumble foot....this is not bumble foot.
The swelling is going down...but toes are lost cause.

I hope yours feels better

....can you post photos of yours for comparison?

New update...I was locking up the chickens and moving my poor golden polish Roo Elvis out of the hospital coop to stay warm with his girls and two of his toes had fallen off. Believe it or not...it looks better. I brought him in the house....soaked his feet.....and gave him an extra dose of antibiotics. I still feel awful about it....I hope he is ok. He drank so much out of the bin while soaking his feet....still disturbed at the nubs on his feet though. Hope he gets better soon.....I think a night in the house will do him good. Hope he does not crow too much tonight!

well that's good can you post a new picture for comparison and to help others who may have your problem in the future ?

I have been foot soaking him periodically and he is in our hospital coop....(which is always very clean)....but I'm worried about him freezing all by himself in there and I've been putting him back with the others at night for warmth. I had him in the basement....but he was crowing too loud all night.... and keeping us all up.

Outside any other questions of systemic infection or what the cause is etc. IMHO if you do not keep this bird (or any others having serious problems) in a warm temp stable environment then you are not providing sufficient basic support to encourage/enable recovery... When it is cold (and I am assuming really cold temps where you are at) then all the birds energy is directing towards keeping warm (and therefore immune competancy even in a "healthy" bird is at its lowest when cold stressed)...
perhaps you can put the bird inside a dog carrier or such in the basement (> perhaps with a couple friends for the sleeping period) as this might reduce the crowing (and also help with warmth) ...

THANK YOU dhlunicorn ( I was hoping you'd post soon)....I had the same assumptions 3 days ago and the poor guy has been in my basement for 2 days. It is just too cold out...and forecast for -20 below!! I UPPED his dose of antibiotic and the toes/stumps are healing VERY nicely. No more blood exposed and scabbed over. He is much happier in the basement and not crowing much at all...
I will post photos tomorrow of the stumps. I still am not knowing what caused this...but relieved the antibiotic is doing what it is supposed to. Going to call the Vet for more meds...because I doubled them up. He was a tough sell on the antibiotic laden cottage cheese...and I removed all food...so he had no choice!

He should do fine without some toes. I have a hen who unfortunately had toes chewed off while she was stuck in an animal trap. From what I figured out, a racoon probably pulled both feet through the cage and ate them.

I had to amputate a toe or 2 that were just hanging on by some tissue. She has no toes on 1 foot and 2 on the other. She gets around ok. I did keep her inside while she was healing .
good luck !
