Help! Heat index next week predicted to be 111! Should I install an air conditioner?

Great looking coop Mama Hen. It's one of the most beautiful I have ever seen. Brings a smile to my face just looking at it. I'm sure your hens are happy and your mind is at peace in those hot days so is money well used. My coop is in shade of a big tree but still it can get too hot. I'm exploring options and If gets really hot I'll try the fan. Thanks for sharing.

Bless your heart!

I'm also considering AC for periodic use in our coop. We live in the Hudson Valley (NYS) and the humidity can get so intense during the summer. I have a daughter with disabilities and AC will allow her to care for her chicks in the hot weather. In my case, AC will not only help the chickens but it will also help my daughter.

Completely makes sense! The heat here in the summer is often so intense that you can only go outside for very short periods. And working in it can be dangerous if you don't use precautions. I'm going to use the fan and may put the AC in there for those really really bad days.

I also wanted to add, that I placed a small air conditioner in one of my sheds where I keep my pregnant and kindling rabbits. The Jersey Woolies, have a lot of wool and my barn is cool enough for them most of the summer. When it is really bad, or if I notice any of them having a hard time, I put them in the shed and turn on the air in the afternoon. I don't make it too cool, but even 8 or 10 degrees cooler makes a difference for them. I think it is a good idea, if you are able to make them more comfortable. A lot of animals across the country, die from heat exhaustion in the summer. It is an individuals choice of how to make their pets safe from the summer heat. It is important to ignore remarks from crabby members too!
They are on every thread it seems.
Thanks, BunnyMomma. I think you're right.

You're welcome! I have an older rabbit (a blue tortoiseshell, fuzzy lop) that is here on retirement from another rabbitry. He is adorable. He had a championship career a mile long. The summers are very hard on him now that he is old, so I move him to the kindling shed with the girls when the temps are really high. I know he appreciates having some comfort in his retirement. He is a sweetie pie! If I could afford it, I would have a climate controlled building for all of my rabbits. It is pretty cool in my barn most of the year. I think I moved him to the shed for about 6 weeks last summer.
Keep those chickies cozy!

Hi littlecritters! That is a great idea. I know that makes your daughter enjoy her chicks more when she is not too hot. When I put a small air conditioner in my garden shed, it only cost about 1.00 more per day each month. That is a small price to pay to make your family more comfortable when summers are so brutal.

Please don't tell my chickens that other chickens have painted walls and aircondtioning. My chickens might want to move out. Do you think it would work for them to hitch a ride down to you all?

I think my chickens want heat in the coop today.

I think I've seen it all now, although, I do like the pics of your coops.
