Help!!!! Hen Staggering! Acts Drunk! R.I.P

Michelle, I hope you can take comfort in knowing that you did everything within your power to help this darling little girl! Sometimes we just have to try. Not trying is a bigger crime, in my humble opinion, than trying to hang on. Please find some bit of solace in knowing you made her last days as comfortable as possible. So sorry for your loss.

And don't loose the number of that man who promised you another little girl next spring! Shame on him for offering a bird that he probably knew was not well in the first place! But, Kudos to him for offering a replacement. It's the only decent thing he could do!

Look on the bright side. You gained a great deal of knowledge with this little silky. Hopefully you won't have need of that knowledge in the future, but if you do, you have it!

Thank You. I kinda figured he knew she was sick to and that's why he sold her. But I didn't say anything. I didn't want to step on anyone's toes. Just in case it did happen from all the stress the poor girl went through. Honestly if I would have known she came all the way from missouri I might have not bought her. Just cause of figuring in all the stress. Yes, I did program his number in my phone. I am already counting down the days, for my new hen. She was so pretty. You have no choice but to get attached when there living in your house and you are spending all your time with them to try and heal them. I did try and I do know that. I just wish I knew what was wrong. still a mystery, guess I'll never know.

Michelle

I just read over your post. So sorry about your silkie. It sounds like the lice had worn her down and weakened her to the point where she had trouble standing etc.... I have had luck with tube feeding baby parrot feeding formula and a poultry cell (like Red Cell for horses). Many times however they are too far gone..... sorry that was your luck with this one.

why would you want another bird from a breeder who clearly has at the very least a severe lice problem? if he cant keep the birds bug free who knows what else is in his flock. Even if he did not notice at first there is no way he packed up a bird to ship and did not see that they were infected then, yet he shipped to you anyway and did not even warn you. Not to sound harsh but why would you put yourself in that situation again, or put your other birds at risk?

I understand your concern and I appreciate it. But I always quarntune my new birds from my birds before they run together. I never let them near my other one till I go over them and it has been about a week and I know there good. Then They get released with the other birds. That is how I found out she had bad lice. Lice can easily be resolved on a couple birds. Just as long as you don't let them run with your flock.

Thanks

I am so sorry your baby died. I have one that looks alot like her. Very nice little Silkie.

It is best to keep all new birds from your flock for a minimum of 30 days.

The lice and mites may have been what killed her, they are constantly sucking blood and draining their energy. I think maybe she had them so long that she was just too weak and too much blood loss.

I would ask the seller if their is any way that he could treat your new bird for lice and mites. But, I am with AHappychick, I am not sure that I would want another one of this man's birds. It doesn't seem like he taking good care of them. I would think that he would want to if has show birds, but everyone is different in the way that they care for their birds.

You did everything that you could do for her.

reesepoultry, I'm so sorry for your loss. Seems like when you get a good thing you have to either nurse them back, cull or preditor. I hope your next one is much better.

Wow, you guys are making me even more curious! I have a 16 week old roo that is doing a lot of thrashing around and its terrible. If you have ideas or anything go to this link- https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=2987189#p2987189

I'd
appreciate any suggestions!

Thanks everyone. Bad luck always seems to find me. Lol...
It's okay though I just ordered 2 dozen silkie hatching eggs from bobbi porto. And a 2 dozen off of a couple of others. I am intending on haveing nothing but SQ in my flock. So I will be selling a lot of silkies next spring.
