HELP!! How long can a broody hen safely leave her nest?

I love that new thread!! What a great idea!! I have a few pics that I’ll share, mom is still super protective and scoots them underneath her when I come around for too long :p. My husband said he saw her out of the coop today though so maybe she’ll take the babies out soon!! I have one yellow chick who’s bigger than its siblings too! How funny! They’re doing well, growing fast already!! I’ll post the pics I have.

Not too many. But my little blonde chick is already changing colors on her wings! I’ll try to snap a pic and post it tomorrow :). You’re babies are sooo cute!! LOVE the pics of them outside. I’ll be following your post!

Thank you! She is gorgeous, isn’t she? I was hoping one of the babies hatched from one of her eggs. I guess we shall see!! She was on the property when we bought our house so I’m not 100% sure, but I believe she’s a golden laced Wyandotte. I’m excited to watch your chicks grow as well :). So fun!!

Cuteness! :love:love
I can’t wait to see what they look like! I wish I understood chicken color genetics better :he
I know I'm the same - I really want to know what my 'stripey' Araucanas will look like as adults - I did ask on a thread on here but didn't get an answer and google didn't seem to help - I found those marking on pics of day old chicks but no reference to what they will look like later!I did ask the lady when I got my new eggs yesterday but it was a confused answer in French so it kind of lost me!

My newbie chicken person would have said that too . What other options are there in your flock that she could have come from - what roosters / hens do you have?

So frustrating! I've done that too...tried to find out what I have and come up more confused then when I started:he....My first 7 hens were left at our place when we bought it, so I had no idea what they were initially. I did some research but I'm still not 100% sure! The next 6 we bought shortly after we moved in last fall, and I know all of the breeds except for two of them. I think they're cochins, but not really sure about them either. I wasn't paying attention at the time, I just wanted cute chicks and specific egg color :DThen this spring we bought 10, and I finally have my *you know what* together and know exactly what all of them are! I also have two I adopted from a friend of a friend, was told that they were Ameracauna, but they're EE. I LOVE them though so I don't care if they're not pure Ameracauna. Then there's the rooster, who I saved from a flock with too many roos....he's a BR but I didn't know that either until I did some research. It's not as easy as people make it seem, is it?!

The parents of the chicks are my rooster (obviously) and up to three of the original 7 hens. I know this because the younger layers still have pretty small eggs and all of the eggs I placed under my broody were larger. So of the potential hens, there are 3 Buff Orpingtons, two Golden Laced Wyondottes, a Rhode Island Red, and an Australorp.....I think. Who knows what they really are:idunno:lau Any thoughts?

Are you going to hatch more eggs? I think I remember seeing that you have another broody, but maybe I'm mistaken....I love these little cuties so much I want more!! I'm thinking next time I'll buy fertilized eggs though so I KNOW what I'm getting;)

Sure isn't :lau

No idea!!! Can't wait to see what they turn out like though!

Sure am - Doris the slightly dim silkie is broody. I went and picked up some eggs from the lady i got the first lot from (and she didn't charge me for any of them as I'd had 4 unfertile ones in the last lot!) - I got 3 splash Orpingtons, 2 Australorps and 1 Black Copper Marans. My neighbours uncle gave her for me 6 gorgeous Faverolles eggs as well (they are so lovely and big and white - quite excited about them!) but 12 is too many eggs for a little silkie so I just put 3 of those under her. So excited - only another 20 days to wait!! We are madly building a little coop to move mama and chicks into so I can get Doris away from the big girls and into safety!

I've been doing some research, and it appears ALL of the chicks will be barred. Not sure what other coloring they'll have though so we shall see!! Here's the calculator I found. It takes a bit to get used to, but it's pretty interesting...http://kippenjungle.nl/kruising.html

"Doris the slightly dim silkie":gig I love it!! How exciting.....and stressful! Another 20 days??!! LOL! I need a break. The first 21 were stressful enough! I'm excited to see your new babies though!! I love all of the different colors you're going to have. Quite a lovely flock:love I want silkies but I was told they couldn't free range, and my birds are only in the coop at night so I would have to build a whole new set up. I'm not ready for that yet :(. Are you starting a new thread for this hatch? If so I want to follow it!

UPDATE!

So I candled the remaining 4 eggs tonight. I didn’t see movement in any of them, but I didn’t see blood rings in any of them either. Also, maybe I’m just being hopeful, but the shadowy area looked bigger in all of them. Sooo what do the experts think? Good sign?
I know this was a long time ago but the same thing kind of happened to my brooding hen and I wanted to know if they ever hatched. Hopefully you see this

I know it’s been a long time and you may not see this but did those eggs have hatched because something similar happened to my brooding hen.
