Help, I am Addicted!

Horses are bad too! But they are larger so you only need one or two to fill the void. Let's see, a horse weighs about 1000 lbs, chickens about 5 lbs, so you'd need about 200 chickens to equal one horse.

Sounds right to me

, but I should have enought money saved up after selling at the farmer's market this year. So I haul water out there, but it doesn't bother me at all! I love countryliving and want to become sustainable, I have lived in the city my entire life but have agriculture in my genes! I lost my job last December, and it is hard to find one! So I have been mowing lawns and selling produce ( which I have done since I was 13) at the farmer's market, and doing odd jobs for people. So I am trying to find a way to make money, and figured poultry could be another niche market in my area! Around here there is only one show quality breeder in a four county area. By the way, at yesterdays market, the first thing I sold was my two dozen eggs I had! So I know there is a market for eggs, but I was kind of dissapointed, because I didn't sell any chicks from the batch I have now. I think $4 a chick is too high, so I think I will try $3 on Wednesday. I thought I might put a sign on the back of my truck that says "baby chicks for sell" and see if I get any phone calls, and we also have a radio station that has want ads, where I can call in and advertise chicks for sell, and it is free!
Does anybody have suggestions on a good price to sell chicks for? Remeber they are hatchery quality, and I have to make a profit! I will have $1.13 tied up in each chick ( 40 chicks), and a bag of chick starter cost $13, so that averages out to $0.33 a chick for food. So average cost would be $ 1.46 ea. If I sell for $3, that would be a $1.54 profit a chick. So a total of $ 61 dollars profit! Is $3 resonable?
Thanks for all the support and help!
I will be ordering tomorrow!

I raised horse up until 3 years ago, feed got to high, cost of horse got to low and i was feeding 350 to 400 pounds of feed a day, with decent pasture.

I sold my entire registered herd for 15,000 dollars i paid twice that much for my breeding stock alone, i just could not afford it any longer and i do miss raising them but they became a money pit with no bottom

Jared you are crazy but you will not find help here unless your birds need it. We are all enablers and addicts. It is good that you have realized your calling early, think of all those lost years if you started when you were 50.

I bought my first sportsman cabinet bator and sold my chicks for 75 cents each as 3 to 4 day olds never have any left, no feed in them to speak of and heck i only got a dollar for a dozen eggs, i did this for 3 months and then purchased my sportsman hatcher, then i bought another sportsman bator and did the same thing.

I can hatch alot of chicks with little effort and make money doing it.

I also found i can make a bit of money hatching for others and don't have to mess with selling all the time.

WOW... If those pale faced paints had wall eyes I would have paid $15 grand for them alone

you can buy good registered stock for under 400 now all day long around here.
