Help! I have Infectious Coryza in my flock

I'm so sorry you're going through this. It's why I never buy started birds from anyone and everyone here has to spray their shoes before entering (may not be perfect, but it's something)

I think they are safe to eat, but I want someone else who knows more about it to verify that for you. You may want to read through this thread by gumpsgirl about her bout with this from adding one chick that wasn't quarantined:

iluv... :

I had actually kept the infected chicken(s) in question quarantined in a Chick-N-Hutch away from my chicks. However they were they still in the backyard so it was probably spread through the air:

"Transmission occurs by direct bird to bird contact, inhalation of infectious aerosols coughed into the air, or through ingestion of contaminated feed and water. The organism can be transferred on contaminated clothing, equipment and fomites."(http://www.peafowl.org/ARTICLES/15/).

I'm going to go ahead with Tylan and we'll see where it goes from there. Any that are doing worse I'll just have to cull. I won't be adding any chickens or selling any.

I think this might be the first and last time I will be raising chicks.
I don't think I can take it. I was already crying when I had to cull the first set.

I may have forgotten to mention but we are talking about a good amount of possible infected birds.

Btw: I wanted to know if it's safe for human consumption. My mom thinks it's going to be a waste if just throw them away after we kill them.

Mavbe have one bird tested as sinusitus and coryza , do look alot alike...Sinsitus can be cured with tylan , birds will not be carriers, but coryza is the one they all needed cull...sorry if that what it is.

Truly, the only way to know what it is is to have one tested, like deerman said. So many illnesses can mimic each other. Never had sinusitis here or any type of respiratory illness, at least not in the five years I've had chickens. If one has symptoms, I'll cull if I can't be sure what is wrong. If the entire flock came down with something, I'd call in the state to test them. I already keep a closed flock.

Thanks I read it, it was very insightful.

"Use one teaspoon of Gallimycin powder and one teaspoon of Aureomycin/Sulmet powder in one gallon of drinking water for 7 days and then takeout the Aureomycin/Sulmet and boost the Gallimycin powder up to two teaspoons in a gallon of drinking water for an additional 7 days. When treatment is complete vaccinate all birds that are three weeks of age and older with ½ cc of Coryza vaccine under the skin of the neck. Repeat the vaccination with the same dose of Coryza vaccine four weeks later. Reactors ( birds that still show Coryza symptoms ) usually show up from two to four weeks after the last vaccination takes place. These birds are your carriers and should be eliminated if at all possible. Dispose of all carcasses by either burning or burying them. Do not expect birds that are sick to exhibit all of the symptoms described in this article all at the same time. While this is possible it almost never happens that way."

I'm going to do what it says.

Thanks for all the input and advice everyone.

I know this was an old thread, hopefully the OP still checks this....
I'm going through a similar situation.
Culled some, hanging on to the last few.
I was wondering what ever happened to the rest of your flock?
Did they improve or did everyone get culled?
