Last night it was very close to 0 degrees and I put lots of straw in the duck house and they were fine. But tonight thru tomorrow we are under a wind chill advisory and are expecting wind chills 20-25 degrees BELOW ZERO!?? I am putting a heat lamp in by chicken coop mounted to a stud using some quick grip bar clamps. So heres my question: will the ducks be okay in their 2.5 By 3.5 duck house or should I set up a play pen in the coop for them?:idunno

Don't put a heat lamp in - those cause more problems than they solve. As long as the coop is draft-free and they can get out of the wind, they're going to be fine. They do not need heat. In fact, giving them heat could actually kill them - if they get used to the heat and then your power goes out and they are plunged into sudden cold without having been able to acclimate, they can go into shock and die.

Plus, tons of people burn their coops and barns done with heat lamps each year. It's just not worth the risk.

Believe me, they're going to be fine. We're going to have wind chill at -35 in the next couple of days here too and I'm not going to do anything special for my birds. Extra hay to bed down in, if they want it, and that's it.

Is your chicken coop that drafty?? If the wind can blow on them enough that the windchill will affect them, your heat lamp isn't going to do any good. If, however, they are in a draft-free, well ventilated coop, they will be fine without the heat lamp. Wind chill factors affect those out in the wind. Way different than actual air temp. No need to panic. Chickens (I don't know anything about ducks, so will refrain from comment there) can handle cold a lot better than they do heat. They are well equipped to stay warm with their little built in down coats. As the temperatures have gotten colder this fall and winter, they have acclimated by growing more down. They fluff up their feathers and that traps their body heat. Adding heat will likely cause them to be too warm, because they have acclimated to the cold. If they're not directly in the wind, they should be fine.

It was -15 the other day where I live and at night, even draft free, my ducks were shivering. I put two heat lamps over their water so it wouldn't freeze. (everyone can hate and scold me for that but they were reinforced like crazy) plus I had a radiant heat panel on the ground for them (no fear of fire with this), added extra straw, AND went to the store to get foam board panels to put up in their coop and it was STILL cold as helllll, luckily after all that they stopped shivering though - and all of that didn't even put a DENT in the cold. Cold temps are hard man! But like everyone says, with the right size coop to keep temps right, enough straw, they should be just fine!

What did you end up deciding? How did everyone do? We had the same weather here, and I was terrified that I would wake up to ducksicles! I would love to hope that that is the coldest that it will get this winter. Is it too much to ask? Probably :(

Yep I was freaking out when they said it was going to be -1 here (not including windchill) and was tempted to bring them in. I didn't. They're fine. Amazing critters they are!

Oh hey, you're in Vermont too. Always nice to see a fellow Vermonter on here :)

I did not a thing for my ducks in the cold weather we had. They're all fine, and I even have Calls.
