Help! I think an undeveloped egg is stuck in my hen's vent?? Prolapse? Let it pass? Bath?

Hello! My chicken Blue here has always been a slightly problematic layer, she lays the hugest eggs I've ever seen, and to be honest I'm not sure how she's done it this long (she's about 2.5). This morning when I went to take care of them, I noticed this giant white bulb like material sticking out of her vent and it looks stuck. She isn't acting weird at all, she's trotting along like nothings wrong, feasting and scratching as usual (again--she's always been weird) she's also going through an extreme molting phase after our rooster was getting very frisky with her.

Should I let her try to pass it? I'm worried that it'll block her internally and cause internal infections. Could it actually be vent prolapse? If so, what should I do if I don't use a chicken vet.

Thanks!

It could be a vent prolapse or some malformed egg or egg membrane. Give her a human calcium citrate tablet with d, or a Tums to increase her muscle contraction to help pass it. I would consider soaking her in a tub of warm water. Exam it an see if it is a prolapse, a prolapse with an egg or possible lash material. If it is not a prolapse, try to gently remove it. Take clear pictures of it once you have done this. A prolapse must be kept from drying out by applying honey or ointment. I will check back in later on.

Thank you for this! I examined the vent area and it seem to have the consistency of either an egg shell membrane or some sort of lash egg? Some of it did end of coming off the bulb, to be honest I'm not entirely sure, but it was hard.. and after I removed some white parts I realized that it was also attached internally, so I left it as was and went to the store to get some supplies. When I returned in an hour whatever was hanging out of her vent was no longer there... I looked in our extension and couldn't find it anywhere.., could it have gone back inside her?

Regardless, I went ahead and gave her an epsom salt bath and get her some calcium citrate. She's acting totally normal with all this going on which I find also strange. We'll see how she does overnight. I also put some vasaline around her vent to help pass things if needed.

Honestly she may have passed the egg or lash material and ate it, as disgusting as that sounds. It could be possible that it went back inside as well. I’m glad that it is no longer blocking her vent. Is she pooping okay? I would repeat the calcium every 24 hours for up to a week. That hopefully will strengthen her shells, increase muscle contraction, and prevent egg binding. Offer her soft cooked eggs or a bit of tuna, and some watery chicken feed. Let us know how she gets along.
