I had a broody hen so I decided to order some hatching eggs for her. They are on their way, and she is not brooding anymore. :barnieCan anyone recommend a good incubator for a first timer?

Janoel 24 and 12 versions have worked well for me. Depending on how fast you need it, craigslist has great deals just make sure you stick with a known incubator and Styrofoam at farm stores in a pinch(just rehabbed a 30 year old one into a cabinet). Ours gives me a discount just for asking because I've been a regular customer for 30+ years.

I looked up all the incubators online, but in the end I bought the one available at the Wilco Farm Store locally. Why? Because I could get it in less than a week and my problem was hatching eggs on their way and a broody chicken not being so broody all of a sudden. Ah....chicken life. :wee We just go with the flow.

All such helpful suggestions. Thank you sooooooo much!!!!:love I ended up buying what was available at a local farm store and will read everything about it in the morning. Eggs arrive tomorrow. How did I get myself into this position?????:idunno Thought I had a broody and now....I guess I'm the broody?????

Next time wait out the broody to be sure she's dedicated. For example, my first broody this year, she acted crazy for a good three weeks, cooing at everybody, rebuffing the rooster's advances, etc. She refused to sleep anywhere but on the next box for an entire week. She insisted those fake wood eggs had to hatch! Finally I gave up trying to break her and gave her some eggs to hatch. She just hatched 3 babies and is the happiest chicken I've ever seen.
