Hello! A few days ago I realized that my Rhode Island Red hen wasn't opening her right eye. I recently added some younger Wyandotte's to the flock and expected she got pecked in the eye while sorting out the pecking order. She is now sometimes half opening her eye but now she has closed her left eye too. I have found her dipping her eyes in puddles around the coop, maybe because it cools her down? There is no nasal or eye discharge. I have a problem with some juncos eating from the chicken feeder when the chickens are out free ranging. So I was worried that maybe she has mycoplasma. Hopefully she doesn't because from what I've heard I will just have to cull her. I also know that there is a strain of Mareks that effects the eyes. Both irises are maintaining their natural color. Anyways, does anyone have any ideas? She is now almost totally blind and really struggling. I just would like to know if I can treat this or if it would be better if she was culled. Thank you!

Could you open the eye and get a picture of it? Look for bubbles in the eye, pus, the color of the iris and shape of the pupil? There are many eye disorders that can be possible, and the picture may help. Respiratory diseases can cause bubbles or pus in an eye with swelling or conjunctivitis. You may need to keep her in a small pen or dog crate near her food and water so that she can find it. I also would offer her food and water a couple of times a time, and hold a bowl or cup up to her beak. Wet chicken feed, cooked egg, tuna, and canned cat food are all good, but water and chicken feed are most important.

Sorry it took so long to get a picture, I wasn't around to take one. Also sorry I couldn't get a really good picture because every time I tried to open her eye she would shake her head and try to flap away. And btw the little white line on her eye is just glare from outside the coop.

Her pupils appear abnormal, although the left eye is difficult to see well. The conjunctiva or pink around the eye look inflammed. I would try applying some Terramycin eye ointment into the eye twice daily. Irrigate the eyes and clean out if there is any drainage or crust around the eye. Could she have been pecked?

Thank you, I thought she was pecked at first too. Until her other eye appeared like this and I thought it would be unusual that both eyes were pecked in such a short period. Also, I found green poop around her vent which seemed concerning but she does free range and eat lots of grass.

Do you think salmonella is possible? I hear it can cause blindness.

I have never heard that salmonella can caue blindness. The usual causes of blindness can be cataracts which cause a cloudy pupil, ammonia odors from excess droppings which can burn the eyes, infection, pecking or injuries, respiratory diseases, Mareks disease, and AE infection as a baby chick which is also called epidemic tremors. If you want to read about symptoms of salmonella, here is some reading:

Thank you very much! was getting very worried that it might be salmonella, I just heard it on one account. I am planning to get the eye ointment you suggested tomorrow. But do you think Mareks is a possibility, she is vaccinated but I have already had two chickens die from it since September. Anyways, thank you very much for helping me, usually I get so much help on this forum but I guess you are the only person that knows anything about this😅.
