Hi chicken friends!

Just had a nice chicken run built. Looking for the correct sand to place 5” deep in base of run.

Is “top sans & pea gravel mix” sufficient? I’ve including a pic of the material. Also a pic of the list of other materials available at my local quarry- any on there look like better options??

I would say yes, but I am no sand expert. The one thing you need is coarse sand - and this definitely fits that description.

Unless you live in the desert, I'd strongly advise against sand.
And if you plan on sifting out the poops, you don't want any gravel in the sand.

I live in central California and I think that sand would be OK. I have two coops, one with some sand and the other with dirt. They both work, but I would only put sand near the coop if it is a permanent structure. This will help with drainage and keeping that area nice. It is a total personal preference, but I think the chickens like the dirt better than the sand.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask!:)
