My hen is about 8 yrs old and stopped laying eggs about 3 yrs ago. She's become very lethargic, pale comb, lost weight (pronounced keel), eyes closed, hunched on heals, puffed feathers, won't walk (just sits as if too weak), won't eat or drink. Breathing normal and relaxed. No gurgling. Eyes and nose clear. No sign of mites or lice. Poops non existent all day in quarantine. Rancid smell coming from her, pretty sure it's in her beak/breadth. Also pretty sure it's not sour crop as she has a very empty crop at the moment. Forced some greek yogurt with electrolytes in her beak and warm honey water. She isn't happy with me. Any suggestions?????

Update: after a day inside under my watch and a few treatments of fluids and yogurt via the mouth and syringe, she's appearing to have more of a labored breadth.

Really wish I could help her. The symptom I feel that could lend itself as a valuable clue, is the putrid smell exuding from her. Pretty sure from her mouth, but not certain. Worst stank ever! Can smell it standing 2 feet away from her.

Nothing in her crop though, so can't be sour crop, right?

Anybody have thoughts they can share?

she passed away

brown watery liquid leaked from her bum and her nose when she passed, liquid had a corpse-like smell

I threw up ya'all it was that bad

Very sorry for your loss of your hen. It is hard to know what was going on without performing a home autopsy, or having the state vet do a necropsy. She may have had a gizzard or intestinal blockage that caused her to be septic. It is really hard to know. If you can muster the courage to open her abdomen in the morning, you might find some clues. Take pictures of organs and post them if you would like, but I certainly could understand not doing one, and just burying her.
