Help! Lethargic hen, not eating!

I forgot to mention that I always weigh mine before I start treatment. If they lose weight, I know the treatment isn't working. FWIW, my hen weighed 750 grams on day one.

This is the scale I use:

So, I went out and got the Corid today, but I can't pick up the wormer for a few days. I picked up the 9.6% liquid since it was one of the last aprolum drugs in my area... (apparently there has been a cocci outbreak this year in my area). What is the proper dosage for this? I have heard 1 teaspoon per gallon?

My birds have also come down with coccidiosis. I have lost two so far and today I am starting the Corid. On another thread I saw in BYC someone was nice enough to put the dosing. For the Corid powder it is 1 teaspoon per gallon of water and for the liquid it is 9.5 ml per gallon of water. My husband calculated this to about a third of an ounce per gallon of water. On the other thread they also had a old time recipe for treating coccidiosis;
4 lbs dried milk
2 lbs corn meal
2 lbs oatmeal
1 lb of bran
This is all you are supposed to feed them, besides greens, for 5? Days. Since I am giving them the Corid I am only going to supplement with this as a evening treat. The idea is that the dried milk makes them very thirsty so they drink lots of water which does something with the mixture they eat and flushes their system.

I will see if I can locate the thread again and give you the name. I figure if the dried milk will make them drink more water then they will be sure to get the Corid in their system at least.

Ok so I am having a hard time finding the post with the old time remedy, but if you look at any forum post about bloody poop or lethargic hen the dosing amount equates to 1/2 a teaspoon for the powder per gallon of water and 2 teaspoons for the liquid per gallon of water. I am off to start treatment. Good Luck with your girls.

I think I know what thread you are talking about regarding the dosage. I have been told both 1 tsp, or 2 tsp for the liquid, so I wasn't sure. I'll go with the 2 tsp. Treatment lasts between 5-7 days, but I'm going to go with 7 to be safe. If you are putting the Corid in the drinking water, the idea is to make them thirsty. I have been told to feed them their water later than usual, but my hens don''t get water or food at night so they are plenty thirsty in the morning. Do tell me how the dried milk works though. Good luck with your hens, and I'm sorry about the ones you've lost.

They will drink the treated water as long as it is their sole source of water to drink. Make a fresh batch daily and leave it out all day for them to drink. You can change it out after they've gone in the coop for the night, they'll be thirsty and ready to drink it the next morning like you stated. No need to use powdered milk if you're using corid. Powdered milk is used as a temporary treatment for cocci until corid or a sulfa drug can be purchased for treatment....it really depends which cocci strain(s) is/are affecting them.
