Help! Math Conversion!

If I understand this correclty, the directions say to dissolve the powder in a Gallon of water, to arrive at a concentration of 400mg/gallon. This should be all that is required for reconstitution.

The question is WHAT IS THE DOSE (not concentration) that you're supposed to be giving the bird??? For example, if the bird needs 100mg, he needs to drink 1/4 gallon of medicine. That seems like a TON.

How many birds are you supposed to be able to treat with a gallon of medicine? Or is it just a matter of leaving that gallon out for a specified number of days--knowing that the animal scientists who formulted the medicine know how much to expect the bird to drink over several days. (Most human antibiotics are given 10-14 days.)

whenever you have to make up a solution in which you cannot accurately measure such a small quantity of something:

1) decide what's the smallest amount you CAN accurately measure. If you wanna stick w/ weight, that's about 1/2 the scale's smallest division; if you will measure a liquid w/ kitchen utensils it is 1/8 teaspoon; if a powder, you can measure 1/8 tsp onto a table and divide it into halves then halves again w/ a knifeblade, which will get you 1/32 of a tsp.

2) then make it up with the appropriate amount of water (use math) to arrive at the desired concentration solution.

3) use as much or little of that solution as you are supposed to - you may end up discarding some, but it will have been relatively accurately made up and thus work properly and safely, and really why sweat wasting an eighth of a tsp of something?

Thanks. We ended up winging it, for lack of a better term. Just put in a tiny amount.
The meds need to be given for about two weeks. Only two chickens are on it. it is recommended to make new batches every 48 hours - we're keeping it fridged and trying for every three days. I considered making batches and then freezing portions, but we simply don't have room in the freezer. Also, I don't know if that will affect it's potency.
