Yeah, if you are flexible most things can work out. That year I got the seven pullets I also got a straight run order of six Speckled Sussex that were 4 male 2 female so I had a flockmaster. That was the first chickens I got when I moved here. I also ordered 15 sexed pullets (Delaware and Black Australorp) and got 14 pullets. It turned out to be a decent flock.
I also hatch enough to cook one chicken a week, pullet, cockerel, old hen, or old rooster, but I don’t hatch them all at one time. I don’t have the freezer space. I’ll crank up the incubator in about three weeks for my first hatch then play it by ear depending on how many broodies I have. I have a barnyard mix now, no purebreds, but out of that first batch some Australorp went broody. None of the Orpington did. Go figure.
