ok, my wife just got two pet pigeons, which she prefers to keep in the house. I find that they smell a little to me. She cleans the cage once a week at least, sometimes twice. I have to admit they sure look clean and she even bathes them and blow drys them. But god lover her, i still think they smell just a little. SO can anyone give us some tips on how to knock out the smell?

What type of cage and bedding are you using?

I have 2 canaries in a large flight cage. I use corncob bedding that you can get at Walmart.. Don't notice any smell....

Maybe keeping pine shavings for bedding in cage would help with the odor?

I never had problems with keeping pigeons outdoors.

A friend had a pair of doves in his very spacious living room.

I thought that worked okay but I wouldn't have been very comfortable with my pigeons indoors. Gosh, they can eat a ton and with all that food . . .

You aren't supposed to try to discourage that with the chicks. B12 is deficient in a vegetarian diet and so isn't found in regular pigeon food.

May not be very pleasant to think about but they can't get B12 any other way than from a bacteria-rich, ummm, food.

I don't have pigeons these days. Now with chickens . . . . they'll eat just anything - at any age, without excuse and without hesitation

Until I can get my new cage built I have been keeping my D'uccles in a large rabbit cage with a drop down tray they can't reach to peck. I use a small layer of unscented clumping cat litter. If you do something like this make sure they can't reach to eat it.

Rain Rain Go Away D'uccles want to play!

It's probably going to take changing the bedding at least every other day. That's really the only way to keep down the odor. DE helps and you could probably use some of the baking soda type of carpet fresh sprinkled in...
