Help me decide one or the other Barred Rock Roosters

Did one feather up faster than the other? That's something to consider. I would choose #2 if it is bigger and because it looks like his comb is smaller. Less frostbite to worry about in the winter.

I agree w/ gryeyes, I like number 1 for his stance and tail feathers. I can't really tell from the pics--is #2's comb a little weird?

However, if I were you, I would pick the sweetest of the two. As far as I can tell, that's the big deal in a rooster- friendliness to people.

Whoever gets your cast-off is still getting a good deal, though--they're both quite handsome

Thanks for your replies

Both of them have sort of floppy-ish combs. They both feathered out the same and grew identical. Only recently have I been able to tell them apart. #1 is a hare shade darker too.

I have swayed back and fourth with you all as to which one to keep. I just cant decide. I am tempted to go for the bigger one with the smaller comb only because the smaller comb will winter better (I'm not that cold but do drop below freezing one or two times a winter)

Dang it, I am jumping the gun on getting rid of one now. I cant evaluate their personalities yet because they are still young and not even remotely interested in being big bad Roo's yet. Something tells me Mr. Perky #1 may have more attitude only based on his carriage?

Number 1 has a bad comb and bad wings. Number 2 is a much better quality bird. Unless #2 is a mean bird, he is the better choice for a barred rock. If you like the skinnier, more upright stance and tail, get a different breed.

I would keep #2. Though perky can be nice, I don't think you want a tail THAT perky, or Jaunty, as on BYCer calls it. I don't like his comb either. I think it is smart to keep the better stock, you never know when someone may want to hatch some eggs and you should always try to improve what you have, even if you don't show them.
I don't think keeping 2 roos is a bad idea either for a couple of reasons: 1 will take the roll as dominant and do one part of the job, while the other should pick up the slack that is the roos job. and secondly, what if something were to happen to one, you still have a back up.
Good luck deciding.

Thank you all for taking the time to help educate me, I really do appreciate it

I am going to keep #2 as more correct toward the breed standard. I just cant fight my willingness to stay true. Even though I like perky tail its not correct and like one poster said, "get a breed of rooster that has a perky tail" if I like that perky of a tail (I do LOL)

NOW I've got 2 BO Roos to mull over...........pictures soon.
