Help me find my future dog breed?

Min pins are tough little guys, not a good choice, mini guard dogs. Treated like cute toys, they bite.
Frenchies are insanely popular right now! Cute, health issues, and exercise intolerant (can't breathe well).

Labs are easy to find, and come in two types: quiet labs, more likely English types, and busy labs, who do take more time/ daily exercise.
Whippets have some terrier in their background, and are more social and more 'obedience motivated' than any of the other sighthounds. Love them!
Dalmations were nearly destroyed by that awful Disney movie! They were meant to be guard dogs, and are. People will send their toddlers up to a growling individual to give hugs. Ask me how I know this! The only dog we've had who bit anyone, giving ample warning, and people don't 'read dog language' well at all.
Avoid guard dog type breeds unless you are ready to manage one. Love mine, but don't do it if you can't/ won't do right by it.

Thanks Mary! I’ll definitely consider a whippet. Because of my Cavachon, I adore small but sturdy dogs. Something fun about having a dog that could jog or hike miles with you but you could also pick up and put in a car.

I agree with this, too many dogs of guard breeds have behavior issues because owners could not handle them or did not train them properly

Yes, guard breeds take quite a bit of work, from what I’ve gathered.

I do not intend to treat my dog like a toy. Any dog I get I intend to train and socialize and excercise

Sighthounds especially, I'd steer clear of. They have high prey drive that had been untouched by pretty much every breeder, both working and show.



I've only done extensive research in them, never actually owned one however, so this is not coming from firsthand experience

French bulldogs could be good but they can be drooly

If I did a French bulldog, I may go for a neo/mix because I want to steer clear of a dog with a brachycephalic face.

Very short faces are bad for dogs, and people think they are cute. Very sad.
And dogs are individuals, so breed preferences are guidelines, not carved in stone.

Understandable, with frenchies though it is important to find a very goid breeder to minimize those issues

I’m curious about what you mean by untouched? Do you mean the breeders aren’t working on improving the breed anymore?

(Also just want to say, pharaoh hounds and Ibizan hounds are the coolest dogs to me. I’m aware that I’ll never own one though, because they don’t match my lifestyle at all.)

I mean quite the opposite, actually. Most breeds who were once working/sport/hunting dogs have lost part of their drive and instinct. That is especially prevalent in some show lines. In sighthounds however, bow working and show breeders work very hard to protect their dog's coursing abilities. It's very hard to find a sighthound with low prey drive



Same here, Ibizan Hounds specifically, are a dream dog breed for me, although they are very much not what I can handle
