The guy we got them from said that the father was 100% a barred rock but the mother he had no idea as he had multiple hens running around. So what does that mean?barred rock is a female so long as both parents were barred rocks. The barring is too dark for a male.
They are not from the same place or father and mother I should say. We got them at different farms. The barred rocks father was 100% a barred rock but were unsure of who the mother was, as there were multiple hens running around. Are you positive the bird that inseminated your Barred hen was a Buff Orpington?
Is it possible that another bird is the father?
They don't look like they're the cross you'd get by putting a Buff Orpington rooster over a Barred hen.
That means it would have gotten one copy of the barring gene from it's father and if it's mom was not a barred chicken it wouldnt get the second copy if it was a boy. Making it's barring look like a females regardless of gender. The guy we got them from said that the father was 100% a barred rock but the mother he had no idea as he had multiple hens running around. You'll probably have to wait to find out about that one. I know my barred rock girls started laying at about 21 weeks. But you might be able to tell around 12-13 weeks when the feathers come in. Pointy around the neck and around the tail on the back for boys, rounded for girls.
