Help me name my 4th chicken!

Did you get the chicks, yet? Just wondering how the names fit?

Thanks for asking. Yes, I've had my baby girls for about 5 days. They have been sooo much fun. They are thriving and doing well. One fell asleep in my hand the other day.

I have to admit I re-thought the names after they arrived. I have one blackish-brownish EE that I think looks more exotic, so she got the most exotic of the names (Teak-a-tee). This name is from the Book the Secret Life of Bees. One of the characters had an invisible friend named Teak-a-tee. Although I didn't love the book, I thought that would be a great name for a chicken.

The other EE is Pollybelle. She is mostly light yellow with some dark accents. I got this name from doing some family history. She seems to already be top in the pecking order so DH suggested naming her Atilla the Hen. We will see....(I would call her Tilly)

My son, who spurred my interest in getting chickens, likes the name "Kook-a-mook", for the light colored EE. It goes together well with the other EE's chosen name. I guess the decision on that one is still in the making.

The two BOs are so much alike that I decided to call them "twins." (I actually have no idea if they are or not) But right now I'm thinking of calling both of them Henny-Penny. Once I can tell them apart better, one would be Henny and the other Penny.

How are you and your chicken adventures going? Tell me about what's happening for you. I will post some pictures as soon as I can.

Sounds like you are off to a great start. Love the names! I had a feeling some would change when the chicks arrived. Great idea referring to both of the twins as Henny Penny until you can tell one from the other. Very clever!

I have 22 baby chicks (7 different breeds) that I just received last Tuesday. I have been holding back naming them until their personalities show and I can tell them apart more. Although we did have one named Jason Bourne, an Australorp who did not make it past Thursday. She had spraddle leg and would not eat. My son named her Jason Bourne after the movie character hoping that she would be invincible as well. She was very sweet but not strong enough to pull through. Very Sad. The rest seem to be doing well. There is a tiny Delaware that I am starting to call Midge, because she is so much smaller than the others and a large Rhode Island Red that is Big Red! Not too original, I know, but very fitting! The girls were all born on St. Patrick's Day, so, there will be a RIR named Patty. I am just not sure which one she is, yet! I am really enjoying watching them grow. They get so big so fast and seem to change overnight. It's amazing! Good luck with yours. I am a little jealous that I have only brown egg layers - no EEs. You're grandchildren will love them!

You gave it a great, albeit short life. I like the names you are thinking about. I agree about waiting to see their personalities. I don't think any of the names I have chosen will be firm until then. I was thinking seriously about Australorp. I hear they are great beginner birds and friendly. Do you have any others? If you do, I'd be very interested in hearing what they are like as they grow.

I am in chick heaven! This is my first time raising chicks, so, I might have overdone it a little with the #. But, my son wanted to raise the chicks to sell the eggs. Of course, he has been working a lot and will be leaving in early May to work on Martha's Vineyard for the summer and then going back to school in the Fall. So, his project has become my project. I had already ordered the chicks when I realized that but I was in too deep and there was not turning back! It has been a lot of fun so far!

My Dad always said that Rhode Island Reds are the best, so I got 4 of them. But, I wanted to try some other breeds, as well. I have 4 Golden Buff (Red Sex Link, Red Star or Cinnamon Queen, depending on where you got them), 3 Black Australorp, 3 Buff Orpington, 3 Delaware, 3 Barred Rock (1 was my Meyer Meal Maker) and 2 Dominique. I wanted a colorful flock and I wanted to see what types are best for our family! That is why I got so many different breeds. I will definitely post my preferences as time goes on!

Because most of my interaction with them so far has been checking for and cleaning pasty butts, they are all a little skittish. I am going to try to hand feed some to get them more used to me. Wish me luck!
