Help me pick my chicks

@moniquem Minimum is said to be 4 sq ft per bird in the coop, 10 sq ft in the run ... More space the better and it also depends on the breeds you have.

I've been lucky so far but also limit myself to 4BO now, although the most I've had was 5 Wynadottes. Living here/HI rain & wind are our weather problems so this is what I came up with .... Nest box is the dog house, they roost above it at night & there's a poop board under the roost. It's 8 x 12 x 7  really puts a kink in my Chicken Math, ha ha

Yes, I am really interested in Wyandottes but unfortunately this breeder doesn’t have any. :(

Wyandottes and chanteclers are actually not as easy to come by as one would think. So I’m just going to stick with 2 or 3 from a few breeds from this same breeder so I have variety but I’m also not running all around the countryside collecting chicks.

I have heard good things about the buff orp Roos. I will probably be getting a total of 10-12, and I believe they are straight run so I’m sure I will have a few roosters to choose from. The rest will have to go....somewhere.

Here is the list of chicks she’s got. Friendly and calm are the biggest factor here, cold hearty a close second as we do have a heated and insulated coop.

Spitzhaubens
Bielefelders
Ameraucanas (blue, black, splash)
Welsummers
Black Copper Marans
Belgian Malines
Barnevelder
Euskal Oiloas
Australorps
I'd probably skip the Spitzhaubens as they are a small, flighty breed. But the rest all seem like good candidates for calm, cold hardy hens. So you will have to decide what you want. If it were me I'd definitely get some Euskal Oiloas and then get some that are reliable layers like Bielefelders or Welsummers. I think Malines are more of a meat bird but they are interesting, too.

I like the dog crate in the corner< I may steal that idea for my run.

So....if my coop is 88 sqf then I can have 22 chickens in coop. If my run is 96 sqf then I can have 9.5 chickens?..
