Help me pick out a modern game trio! Who is typey-est?

I agree with kelpie on the 4Hers. Thhese birds would be great for 4Hers. Good stock with some faults. A good start. Lots of 4Hers do have hatchery birds here too.

Kelpie, from my understanding, which is limited,. Is to stick with one line and do your outcrossing carefully. Mixing too much different lines may not always be the best thing.

I had heard that, Tiki. I was thinking so few people raise MGB really seriously in the US that the good lines of birchens are probably related. I know next to nothing though!

Kelpie... My experience with the Moderns, bring in new blood and breed until you get something you like, then start backcrossing. That way it's really your bloodline and not just the perpetuation of others' bloodlines. My original stock came from 4 different sources. The third generation came out nice, and then I started backcrossing. I did bring in some new blood this year, only because my birds were starting to get too high in the tail, so I bought a low tailed cock from the Sallees to balance that out. And as far as selling to 4Hers, kids LOVE Moderns, especially when they're tame. So if you tame down the male you don't want, you'll find a loving home for him fast. Good luck!

I think Cheryl Barnaba is in Conn. She is a wonderful lady with some very nice moderns. I met her at Ohio National--she walked us up and down the rows, and we talked about good/not so good points of every Modern there!

The Modern breeders do seem to try to keep the lines separate. That doesn't mean a 'blind cross' isn't going to get you some nice birds, but someone like Cheryl knows who's got what and could probably let you know which direction to go in. And besides, the next great line has to start somewhere!

Next to Cornish, I think Modern bantams are my second favorite bird.

I've gotten a lot of complements from many judges on those birds. I was just trying to help by providing pictures of my best birds that the judges, on the west coast, seem to like.

There were no low blows intended just trying to be helpful.

Once you figure your birds are perfect- you stop improving and learning.

There are NO perfect birds

Unless it is a judge who breeds moderns take the compliments with a grain of salt.

Breed to the standard- not to the whims of others

I am going to go out on a limb here and say you are a junior. These large wins you speak of are they in large open shows or junior shows?

I am not trying to discourage you just hoping to make you a better Modern breeder. You obviously like moderns but if you are not highly critical of your own birds you will not improve and will become disgusted and quit and we need all the Modern Breeders we can get.

Yes I am a junior, and I place highly in open shows quite often.

Where was the low blow? You stated: "the standard says otherwisw but trust me, judges like the perky tail."
That's what I was responding to & I stick by what I said. Obviously I haven't seen what you're showing against but if I was judging a class of moderns & one of yoir birds with a "perky tail" was up against an otherwise equal bird with proper tail carraige you'd lose. Type & station are critically important parts of judging moderns & tail carriage figures prominently in those considerations.
