help me pickbreeds please

I would recommend you getting Freedom Rangers or Red Broilers for your meat birds...they dont have as many health problems and cornish crosses yet they get about the same size 6-8 lbs in
8-11 weeks and there meat tastes better since they can actually walk and eat bugs and grass unlike the cornish crosses. and for egg layers I recommend Rhode Island Reds or Australorps they are very good layers 250-280 egg per year and lay steady for 2-3 years. and can also be used for a bit of meat as they do have some meat on them.

I still say Orpington. Thry are also suppose to have great meat, and they are good layers. RIR may be a good choice to.

You do not HAVE to rule out dual purpose birds. They are more practical and can give you multiple products.

... " Dual purpose chickens, which provide both good eggs and good meat, are generally the best choice for homesteads, small farms, or backyard flocks. Dual purpose breeds also tend to be healthier, more self-sufficient, and better foragers than many more highly bred and specialized breeds."

Cornish are meat birds if you don't want a bird that can be good for either.
agreed I do believe dual purpose birds are they best.

BTW: you are not going to find any really cold hardy birds without going into the dual purpose birds.

If i went dual what is a good even mix bird?

then i may have to go dual. I live in new england.

There are some good Chantecler breeders in your part of the country, in multiple varieties. They are excellent dual purpose fowl and usually have very nice dispositions. Very cold tolerant with cushion combs and small wattles (was developed specifically for a cold hardy dual purpose fowl in canada)
