My RIR, 4 weeks old, has a very bloody stool, even seems to be dripping blood today, I noticed last night (Friday night). She is lethargic and her feathers are ruffled. Not eating much or at all. I came on BYC site and read a lot. Seems like cocci. Read that the best thing is Corid 20% powder, but the only thing I could get was Corid 9.6 Oral Solution (liquid) it is 9.6% amprolium. For treatment it says mix 10mg per 2.2 body weight (1 fl oz. = 29.57 mL); says mix 16 fl oz/100 gal water. I'm so confused. It's for cows, so I don't know what to do. I think my sweet chicken might die if I cannot get this mixed and into her water.

Thanks.

Poor little chicken. I know figuring out dosing is a pain. Let's see... that would be .16 fl oz. /gallon

.16 oz is 4.7 mL per 2.2 (is that pound)

Your chick is probably about a pound, and 4.7 is just a tiny bit less than 1 teaspoon. So does 1 tsp/ gallon sound appropriate?

When I did a little search on dosing just now it said that it is hard do overdose on this medication as long as you are close - in other words if you are not super exact it won't kill your chick.

Hope that helps.

Thank you so much. I mixed 1 teaspoon to a gallon and put it in her water. I also put it in the water of my black chicks just in case. I'm also going to try to put some drops on her beak to make sure she gets some. I love BYC and people like you that help out newbies. I hope I can help someone someday.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. My beautiful RIR is making a remarkable recovery. From dripping blood stools to nice firm brown ones! I gave her the medicine as suggested by you and even sat with her giving her peak full after peak full using the little straw trick I read about on BYC. Her feathers are no longer ruffled and she has definately gotten spunky. I really love my little Primrose. My other two RIR's died, so she is so special to me. I am gaining experience so that someday I can help a new person out there. You are wonderful! I hope to post photos soon.

I started this because I wanted eggs. I have fallen in love. I didn't even know that I love chickens. I never really thought about chickens before. I love my chickens so much, it was so unexpected! Some of my friends think I have gone chicken crazy. I just call it passionate.

PrimroseMom1,
I am happy to hear your chick is better. I lost one of mine a week ago. A black Silkie hen, named Nellie, who was about 15 weeks old. She was blind in one eye and really failed to thrive, but was gentle and so easy for even my granddaughters to handle. She never ate much, then began to have no energy. I took her to food and water the last two days and checked on her throughout the day. My husband buried her under a shade tree in our pasture and I placed a stone marker (with name, date and short message) for Nellie. It was indeed a sad day.

I am so sorry to hear about your sweet little chick. Without knowing her personally, my heart goes out to you. Thanks to BYC, my Primrose is doing wonderfully. She lays everyday. My newspaper is running a contest called Pets in Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness. I made a pink dress for Primrose and submitted her foto in the contest. I hope this gives you a smile at a sad time.
