How does one determine mites infestation. I as well would like to know and treatment suggestions.Hey @casportpony can you help with this also @Eggcessive
Wait a couple hours once your chickens have been on the roost after dark. Take a flash light and inspect them under wings and around vent. You'll see them if they are there. How does one determine mites infestation. I as well would like to know and treatment suggestions.
X2 this is the stuff. You can't believe everything you read.
Invest a few dollars in some permethrin if you want to get rid of the mites.
That's really not feasible if you have over a few chickens. I've had mites once and that was a couple years ago. 3 treatments and haven't had any since. Nor lice.X2 this is the stuff.
Way better than dust and is killer against mites.
I suggest treating the whole flock.
With mites at high intensity on a bird, wash with mite shampoo for cats and let it soak for a while. Clean off their feathers too. The mites drown if they are in water.
Ivermectin may work well for some but there is egg withdrawals and that goes into their system, permethrin is topic and does not.I haven't had a mite infestation but I did see two mites on one chicken last week (I checked everyone very thoroughly). I am paranoid so I did permethrin poultry dust on everyone and in the coop and also used ivermectin pour-on. I bought permethrin spray but haven't used it yet because of rain. I've always heard that ivermectin is good treatment for many parasites including mites -- is that wrong? Just surprised it hadn't been mentioned yet.
Makes sense. The weather this summer has been SO bad: hot, humid, and wet wet wet. Perfect for bugs of all kinds (mosquitoes have been especially prolific) and I just didn't want to risk an infestation. Good to hear permethrin is adequate though!Ivermectin may works well for some but there is egg withdrawals and that goes into their system, permethrin is topic and does not.
Why put harsh stuff in them if you don't have to?
