I just adopted a hen for my backyard free range flock. She has mites :( and they turned into many more in my coop/run I treated the run and coop today before dark right when I noticed them but she keeps digging and I want to help her but not sure what’s safe or not? I thought about giving her a bath along with my other babies or is there some type of powder I can dust all over them?

I’ve been reading about this at my local hardware store is it safe for them?

I took the liberty of getting your thread moved to the best forum to be seen.

The DE is really useless against mites and lice. The best and safest thing to use is permethrin poultry dusting powder. Use directly on the chickens and dust liberally the coop and wherever you saw the mites.

Some mites are super stubborn. If after a few treatments about ten days apart, you still have mites, you might want to consider this product, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0042L8S7A/?tag=backy-20 although it's super expensive. It really, really works.

Permethrin spray concentrate is safe and inexpensive, and works great for the coop and the birds. If it's way too cold to spray the birds, use it all over the coop, and dust the birds with permethrin dust.
DE is a waste of money, dangerous to inhale, and it comes from awful open pit mining.
Repeat in ten days, or weekly for three weeks.
Wear at least a N95 face mask, gloves, and long sleeves when using anything out there!

When you get the permethrin dust, take the time to massage it all the way down to the skin on your birds. Better go ahead and treat them all. Skin under the wings and vent are particularly susceptible to creepy crawlies.

If you are dealing with mites I would treat ASAP. I use a head lamp so I have my hands free and check the birds after they go to roost. Some mites only come out at night and feed on the birds. I use permethrin. It works. I use a gallon sprayer with a wand to get the hard to reach areas and spray my coops thoroughly, walls, floor, ceiling, on and under the roosts, inside and outside of the nest boxes, every crack and crevice. Repeated treatment weekly is necessary because the dust and spray does not kill the mite and pest eggs. There is no egg withdrawal period. Initially I sprayed my birds but now I give them a dusting and put the dust in their nest boxes and have been spraying the coops weekly. No more pests. Wear appropriate clothing and a dust mask if you are dusting. I have tried a lot of different things including DE, it's pretty much worthless in my opinion. If you have a TSC they carry the permethrin powder, the premixed spray bottles and the concentrate. Good luck...

If you want to bathe your birds, every over-the-counter (OTC) treatment for head lice contains either pyrethrins (Rid or Triple X) or permethrin (Nix). They are effective treatment. Both only kill live pests, not eggs.

Thank you guys so much. My husband showed me this that he uses on the yard in the summer time. He said you mix it with water would this be safe for them?
