HELP! My dog wants to eat my chickens!

Also, is there a breed of dog that works best for you... Our dog that did great was Retriever/Aust shep... the worse one was Retriever /German shep

No one is going to like my suggestion but a shock collar or an electric fence charger with one wire around the bottom of the pen will work. I had a mastiff mix that would kill any rodent, cat, squirrel it could catch. He had a pray drive that was unstoppable . One shock from the collar and he wouldn't get within 20 feet of a chicken.

Prey drive is fine for me but must not be directed at chickens. Being directed at foxes, raccoons and even raptors is very much fine if not encouraged.

My dog breed of choice around birds is German Pointer although in longer-term when sheep and goats are acquired a standard livestock guardian breed of some sort will be acquired for them. The pointers will be expected to backup the larger breed when something like coyotes try and team up.

Mutts can do fine around birds and although not intentional or thought out, we had hounds protecting all manner of livestock and they did it very well.

German pointers are used for birds almost exclusively in US.

not true. both the English Cocker Spaniels and the American Cocker Spaniels are specifically breed for hunting birds. Of course they make a great pet and now a days they are in most dog shows. I just have mine because he is a great family dog. It might explain my issues with him not leaving my chicks alone!
