One of my hens is having a horrible time breathing...you can hear her inhaling and exhaling, and it sounds as if she's crying. Occasionally she makes a sound like a hiccup, and she's very stressed. I don't know what's wrong, and I don't know what to do...Please send any advice.

More info ....such as age, size of flock, coop conditions etc would be more helpful. Hopefully someone can help. sorry I'm not that person

my hen too is having trouble. we have 7 year old laying hens, and just added 8 2 mos. old chicks to the coop. the hen with the problem is supposed to be a golden sex-linked we picked up last year at the feed store. this morning my son and i noticed her weazing. i actually thought that she was trying to cluck and maybe had a hoarse throught. we thought it cute at the time, but now it is going on evening and she hasn't moved much and is constantly making that silent gasping. She has stayed alone and none of the other hens seem to notice. Any thoughts on a diagnosis or treatment?

reading speckled chickens rules of raising chickens and #8 was cull a sick chicken. so, I'm thinking if it's true that chickens don't get colds, we should off her? poor girl.

It is your decision to cull or not. If you are only raising chickens as pets you can treat, if you are raising for other purposes then it is up to you. Tylan 50 cattle inject able, injected under the skin or in breast muscle, 1/2-1 cc for 8-10lb chicken, for 3 days. 1/4-1/2 cc for bantam, less for chick, even give some drops in beak, works well for respiratory illnesses.

To find what you have:

Coryza- often has a bad smell about the face. Yellow puss often seen in eye or nares. Swollen sinus, Open mouth breathing, wheezing

MG/MS - Weeping watery, clear/white discharge in eye & nares, bubbles in corner of eye, swollen sinus, open mouth breathing, wheezing... MS, limping or trouble w/balance

many others..... do a search.

I just went thru this. 1/2 ounce of duramyacin in 1 gallon of water for 3 days fixed my hen nicely. Was told to toss my eggs for a week after . Hope this helps.

Please can someone help me? This morning my EE hen was breathing very hard, one of my other hens were picking on her. So I thought it was stress. I got them all the same time a week old the 3 of april, that makes her about 13weeks old. She has a good solid body no changes in the face or nares but the beak is sometimes open when she runs or does something more then a stroll. This is the time she makes a honking kinda noise, it almost sounds like a bark. She is still a baby and I will not cull her. Any ideas as to what is going on with her. Clean chick coop. 10 hens all about the same age eating start and grown non medicated with veggy scraps, also free ranging. Thanks for any kind of help
