I think that the dominant rooster is making him not crow
Some local people where i trying to give him away. I have to many roosters. He’s a cockerel. Who is saying that is a hen?
Reading this thread, makes me question one of my 'girls'. Australorp that looks VERY similar to the one in the OP's picture. She doesn't have the tell-tale saddle/hackle feathers of a cockerel either as far as I can tell. I really don't think she is a rooster/cockerel, because I am pretty sure she has laid eggs ( she was in the nesting box and I heard the egg drop). She is about 8 mo old, and she doesn't crow but her comb and wattles are similar to the one shown in the photo, just not quite as pronounced. She challenges the bantam cochin cockerel I have from time to time, and is a bit bossy. I had two cockerels previously but lost one of them to a hawk, so could it be that my australorp girl is just challenging my roo/cockerel? She's always been near or at the top of the pecking order.Just a side point. I have an Australorp hen that had to be inside while recovering from a broken wing. Eventually her comb and wattles grew and she started making a crowing sound in the morning. Not as good as a rooster but you knew what it was. Her comb and wattles didn't shrink up that much but she started occasionally mounting a low ranking hen. But she did not grow saddle feathers.
That has all stopped now but people still swear she's a rooster. But before henopause she laid and egg about every 30 hours. I know because for a while she wanted to come in the house and use the basement cage. Her timing was perfect so we knew when she would show up at the door. LOL
Your australorp isn't a rooster unless she has saddles. Comb and wattles vary bird to bird.Reading this thread, makes me question one of my 'girls'. But - now I am questioning my sanity after reading this thread...lol.
