Help my Rocky roo, PLEASE!!*UPDATE crop impaction*, Rocky's gone

What's tough is that he wasn't just a young chick; he was approximately 2 1/2 yrs. old (if I can believe the woman I got him from...). Up to this point, he has been in good health with the exception of a wing injury about a month ago. I tape-splinted it up and it seemed to be doing fine. I'm going to open his crop in the morning and see if it was impacted from grass or something since there was no sign of respiratory illness, and they freerange most of the day. sigh...

could he have gotten into anything toxic?
any lawn/garden chemicals
any motor oils or chemicals..such as antifreeze, etc..
any old moldy feed around that might have been thrown out or spilled?

check crop for obstruction..

Oh dear... I had such an awful busy day yesterday I crashed out without even checking into bYC....
soooo sorry you lost Rocky...
It could have been so many things (the green color poo was from him not eating and perhaps indicative of a couple things toxic)
...under the circumstances I think you did all the right things and I cant think of a thing extra you could have done differently in this short time that would have made a crucial difference.

i am so sorry but at least he spent the last few hours in your comfort and not alone. i have a 4 year old rooster that is showing signs of his age and i dread the day he leaves me.

Well, just for future reference to anyone who may be facing something like this, I did a mini-necropsy. While I was giving him the yogurt last night and doing some general palpation to check for weight loss or anything else physical, I felt his crop, and it was full. Not knowing the bright green was a sign of bile indicating not eating or bile not being broken down in the gut, I didn't realize his crop wasn't emptying. I recall someone on here did an emergency crop surgery and found an enormous amount of grass. After I blessed him and thanked God for the time I had with him again, I took some kitchen shears and snipped open his crop. It was FULL of grass, pellets, and some scratch. Since I haven't given them scratch in about a week, that tells me the poor fellow has not been digesting food for a week. The sad thing is, though, that he's been eating up until yesterday. I just didn't realize quickly enough that anything was wrong.

Thank you again to all of you who offered information to try to help, and thank you so much to all of you who have offered your kind words and sympathies. I do appreciate all of you so much... Now let's all hope and look for some brighter days to come ...

That was a brave thing to do and I know it was hard on you. Sounds like a crop issue, but at times, it's hard to know which way to turn. Experience is good, but it can come at a price, that's for sure. ((hugs))
