Help! My rooster is trying to kill me

Hi Venevee,

Thank you for the advice. I may have waited too long though because yesterday I was feeding the flock bread on the patio and Bad Randy slammed me. (First time when food was in play).

I love your Avatar. What breed is it?

Quote: Welcome. Nothing is worse than an aggressive rooster. Nothing is better than a good one. Unfortunately since the behavior has gone on for so long it may be harder or impossible to eliminate. One other piece of advice. Don't you walk away from him. In rooster speak the lower ranking rooster leaves when the higher approaches so your walking away and being attacked was his way of telling you he is dominant and you're the one leaving. When you approach him, walk through him, Make him give way and leave. You may need to carry a broom with you but make sure he vamooses. When you leave, make sure he can't attack, even if you need to back away. If he comes at you, go forward. Swatting may be required to get the message across.

Hi NFC,

After reading the responses, I'm beginning to agree especially since Randy rammed me when I was handing out food on the patio yesterday. (Something new!) I appreciate the references and will go there before I do anything rash with Randy.

Hi braehedge,

Thank you for the advice. Randy's been free range all his life so I think a cage wouldn't work for him but I have an organic farm in my backyard which I had to fence in to keep the chickens from eating everything and I think it may be Randy's new temporary home. (At least until planting time)

I've been here a little while and I'm STILL learning to navigate the site...

There's a lot of information and different sections to this site...it a bit of a learning curve. You're doing awesome!

Dekel makes a good point about your leaving and lower rank.

If you decide to think about things for a while...at the very least I would suggest to trim his spurs. There's you tube videos that show how to trim / twist them off or you can certainly ask and one of us can talk you through the procedure. I use the toenail clippers that are used for dog nails. It's really simple...probably the worst that can happen is cutting the spur a bit too short and it bleeding a bit. I'll also trim rooster's nails if they get too long/sharp. I'm from Canada and all my chickens are indoors all winter so they don't have a great opportunity to wear their nails down.

I do have one little roo, he's a tiny OEGB cross guy and he's a feisty fellow to say the least. He's the only one who I've allowed to challenge me because I usually start laughing and can't carry through rectifying the situation. He's such a small guy that sometimes I don't even know he's touched me. He's done this since last year and honestly I don't think he could be changed because it's gone on so long. I have no small kids and everyone knows what he's about...he more of a source of entertainment for us....lol. Especially me because he does pick me out. I'd never sell him to anyone because of his human aggression. He gives me such a laugh that he'll probably be here until his end. I just wanted to mention this in regards to rehabilitation since I have the experience with him.

He he he he... many years ago I had one as well, could hit it in the head with a stick and knock it out, but when it came too it was business as usual and you best not turn your back to the roo. We finally put up an sign that said beware of rooster!

If you take a hatchet and trim its head that will stop it otherwise, put up a sign like we did. .....and wear long pants always.

Beware of rooster....I like that. Accurate AND funny.

I bet that made some people look when they read the sign!
