Help... need to make a decision in regards to my Golden.

Aww Chelsea... just think those 3 little babies that hatched out she'll be watching over! Her crate is right next to their brooder so she hears them all night. So in a way you're here with her!

My golden that passed away in 2005 was the best around chickens. I remember one time a baby chick got out of the pen, and she layed right there with it until I found the chick that was out. She was so gentle and would never hurt a fly.

Mycookoonest - I haven't read the entire thread but it appears you've found a solution.

I know that spay/neuter is incredibly expensive everywhere - hence a lot of people opt not to have it done.

Just a thought - we have a mobile spay/neuter program in NC called SNAP. Maybe there is a similar program in your area??? Also, have you tried the local SPCA? A lot of them - if not all of them - now have certificates for low cost spay/neuter. As a last resort, possibly some local rescues have resources or can refer you? There are several special programs to help in some situations, like "angel funds" and such.

Anyway, I hope this info helps a little. And you are definitely doing the right thing for many reasons by getting her spayed!

For anybody on this board looking for lower cost vet care, I have one suggestion - find a farm vet!! Even if you live in the city, the cost of the road trip to the "outer limits." may be worth it. My farm vet charges about half the price for the same sevices as the townie vets. He is good at what he does too. My only animal that goes to town for the vet is my dog, and that is because he sees a neurologist.

And the smartest thing I ever did for my dog was buy him a cheap health insurance policy. I pay $24.95 per month, and he is locked into that price forever. They pay up to $220 per year for routine and preventative care (spay/neuter, dental, shots, heartworm, frontline, etc) and he has major medical and prescription coverage. When he was diagnosed with epilepsy/hydrocephalus, the bills didn't kill us. Even if he didn't get the hydrocephalus I would be money ahead if I just got the routine preventative stuff done and he had one or two ear infections or other minor sickness. I always suggest to my friends that they look into similar coverage for their dogs. None of us would think anything of paying $20 - $30 per month for prescription medicines for our pets. Why do most people think that paying it for insurance that could save you thousands is crazy? Last year I had 2 friends spend thousands of dollars saving their dogs. That's why I looked at insurance for mine. I bought it in January. In March Leo got sick. My out of pocket expense was less than $150. The insurance company paid the rest. Sorry for the long rant. I'll shut up now.

In my opinion it would be irresponsible NOT to have her spayed at this time.
Mycuckoonest, I think you're doing the right thing and I support you, I only wish you could find a more reasonable veterinarian (price wise). I'm a tech and I'm so disappointed when I see people not getting their pets altered because the local clinics charge outrageous prices.
Bella will be healthier and happier for not having the litter and I know she'll go through the surgery fine.

so is she or isn't she knocked up? I didnt read it all. was she still bleeding bc if she was then chances are good nothing happened.I dont want to start up the fight again but i think you should find out what is in there before you make any harsh decisions.

She planned on having the dog spayed anyway. Nothing harsh about preventing suffering

everyone has their own opinions and that is just mine. If there were to be any pups I am sure they would get good homes. I also do some work in a shelter and it is a bad place for any pet to go. I wish i could take home everyone but i cant keep 300 animals in my house

The father of the possible litter has a bad temperament, and I believe she does not want to make her problem someone else's (well several other people's).
