This morning I noticed our Silkie/Araucana cross was standing hunched up, on one foot, in the corner of the run. I've been keeping an eye on her today as this was out of character for her and have now noticed white discharge collecting in the inner corner of her left eye. Her breathing is also laboured and she's started stretching her neck and opening her beak wide as if trying to shift something.

I'm worried this could be a respiratory infection and was wondering if anyone had experienced these symptoms before within their flock and how you went about treating it?

I'm currently half way through worming the girls with Flubenvet,so I was also wondering if I should stop treating the poorly bird to help her recover or if should I continue with the wormer?

Thank you both for your replies! I'm trying to get a photo of the eye now. However, this hen (Grumpy Jane) is definitely not fond of the camera. I'll post a photo as soon as I get one that isn't blurred!

I'll phone the vets tomorrow and hopefully get her some antibiotics. Do chickens often make a full recovery from respiratory infections?

Also, should I still continue with her Flubenvet treatment?

I would continue with the flubenvet in her feed. MG is a common respiratory infection and symptoms may respond to antibiotics such as Tylosin, oxytet, tiamulin, doxycycline, or Baytril. Symptoms include a gunky eye, eye bubbles, head shaking and congestion. If there is a terrible odor, with those symptoms, coryza may be the cause. Make sure that she us drinking well. Clean any gunk or pus out of the eye, and using an antibiotic ointment or eyedrop may help some too. Here is some info on MG (mycoplasma gallisepticum:)

Once a chicken has a respiratory infection they will always be carriers. It will spread throughout your flock. Some may show symptoms, some may not. If it is a respiratory infection it would be good to try and figure out which one it is. Is there a smell, eye bubbles, drainage from the eyes or mouth? You also need to close your flock if you choose to keep them. No more birds in and no. Irds out, including hatching eggs.

We need pictures if you want us to help you.

I suspect that your bird might have Tapeworm as well ( that may be why she is gasping. )
Just a guess though, I have never personally dealt with tapeworm.
