Hi first time using this site, so I have two pekin ducks witch I have started to breed, so far we have managed to hatch 3 eggs using an incubator but the baby's are not surviving the first lasted 24 hours the second 48 hours and the 3rd 72 hours I have all the bits needed for looking after ducklings but not sure why they are not surviving
I had noticed at one point all of their eyes were not open properly the third eyelid was half closed then the baby's die
Any advice would be great

Hi and :welcome

Sorry you're having problems with the ducklings. I think you might get some answers over on the Duck forum, there are a lot of helpful, experienced members there. Use this link to get straight to it: Ducks

Best of luck!

@WVduckchick Can you pop over here and offer assistance. This one is too far outside my wheel house.

Hi Ria and welcome to BYC:frow We're really happy you've joined us:ya and so sad for your losses:hugs

I posted in the wrong thread. Answer here please. @Ravynscroft I've already called out @WVduckchick --but like to reach out to two. Hope my questions are value add.

Hi, I'm going to give you a bunch of questions to answer which will help the real experts in understanding your situation.
  • What are you feeding mom and dad
    • Percent protein
    • Type of feed
    • Brand Name
  • What temp is your brooder?
  • Is your brooder a brinsea or some other brand? Tell us what brand so we can look at it. A link to it would be really helpful
  • Do you have a thermometer you could put in under it?
  • What are you feeding the babies?
    • Percent Protein
    • Type of feed
    • Brand Name
    • Size of feed
  • What are you using for waterer
    • Are they able to submerge their bills up to their nostrils
  • Are they showing any other signs out of the ordinary while in the brooder
I think this info will go a long way in folks being able to figure out what's going on. They will of course ask their own questions--but trying to get as much info as possible out there for them. I'm hoping for the best for you.

Has she been laying eggs very long? A lot of the first months eggs do not do well hatching... also, type of incubator you are using? What was the temp and humidity? Misting eggs or no? All of these will help narrow down your issues...
Thanks.

My first thought was also how long the hen has been laying. And then tell us about your incubation process, and your brooder.

glad you joined us, and we'll do all we can to help you figure out what's going wrong.
