help needed think my chicken has gangrene

Hi last week my husband bought home some new chooks for me only to find out that the person he bought them off actually didnt give a ____ about them because they were full of scaley leg mite. i have treated them all and will continue to do so (have done my own also so they dont catch it)but the problem im having is :

1) What type of bird , age and weight.
Marmalaide( my daughters chicken) is im told 1yr old and she is a buff silkie not sure of weight but shes not heavy


2) What is the behavior, exactly.
she just sits there not doing to much, she waddles when she walks

3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?
i'm guessing for some time

4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?
not that i am aware of i have checked them all.

5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
bleeding no, injury or trauma not sure this poor chickens feet are so bad the toes are twisted and part black and it is starting to weap and have a yuk smell it has a green tinge to it which worries me!

6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
she has bad scaley mite

7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
i have put her in her own cage just out he front in the car port so her feet stay dry but as far as i can see she hasnt eaten and not sure about drinking

8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc
so far since i have put her in her own cage there is no ppop but she has some stck to her
.
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
so far i have washer her feet in soapy water followed by a lice spray we get here for all birds (2 days ago), i have also yesterday coated her foot in oil with a drop of teatree

10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?
unfortunately a vet is out of the question since a) they have said there isnt alot they can do but if i want to take her in i can and B) it costs over $150 dollars so i would like to treat her myself

11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.

12) Describe the housing/bedding in use
i have now got her in a dry area with her bed as a box with sawdust and no dirt or grass because im trying to keep her dry , she has plenty of available fresh drinking water and food.




please someone can you help my little girl will be devestated if she dies i have to at least try
hubby said he will amputate the toe if he has to but we need to know how etc please

Sounds like bumblefoot.....if not other issues. Search the forums for help on that or wait for expert to post....lol. I have a 2yr old chicken with a crooked toe, its no big deal if they can roost, just looks funny! Good luck and read some in the disease forum and that may help. For now I would seperate that chicken give some electrolite water and scrambled eggs.

also bumblefoot apparently isnt in australia ...i was reading some of the posts and thats what has me worried it is gangrene .......ohhh i hope not i dont know where to start if it is

Severe scaley leg mite can result in infection, loss of toes, even death of the bird from infection. It sounds like she has an infection underneath all the crusts. Do some searches on here for scaley leg mite treatment. Lots of soaks in warm water to soften the scales will help. I would NOT put vaseline or any other occlusive ointment on the area since you don't want to seal the infection in. She NEEDS to be on antibiotics!!! Sorry; this may mean a trip to the vet. Good luck!

Even if you go the vet route, step one would be to assess and clean and the affected area. Then apply non antibiotic cream (one without pain killers)

It is not a pleasent job but there is no way around it, the wound needs to be cleaned out to remove the source of the infection, then given a chance to heal. Flushing with iodine solution is my preferance, peroxide is an option, but it is harsher on surrounding tissue.

Getting antibiotics into the chicken will help with bad infections but it does not replace basic wound care which should be the top priority.

Bumblefoot is a staph infection; hard to believe there is no staph in Australia, in this international world of ours.

For electrolytes you can just put a little Gatorade or other sports drink in the water. I wouldn't overdo it or do it in every refil.

Chickens love to eat not only scrambled eggs but chicken; they love nothing better than to pick a roast chicken carcass clean. They don't exactly have our standards, and if it were a health problem I would think we'd know by now as it's a common practice to feed chickens chicken.

i did some research and followed one story which said to wash with peroxide and then put a antifungal kind of cream on and strap it 1x a day so i have done this is this in your opinion right?
sorry just like to be sure i dont want her hurting anyore than she has to
