Hen hatched 8 babies in the woods. No idea she was broody! We went and found her nest. One fully hatched baby was dead in the dirt. Another egg had partially hatched. The baby was chirping through the whole he pecked. We brought him inside and put under heat lamp. Helped him get out of his shell. I see maggots all over his body. First thought was to sprinkle diatomaceous earth all over him. Blood seems to be coming out of vent area- is this normal for newly hatched chic? Never have seen a baby so young before. Chic is chirping but not standing yet. Literally just out of shell!!! Any advice welcomed. Thank you!!!!

Here are photos. I’m concerned the maggots could have crawled into her vent area. When I helped take the shell off, there was a tiny bit of blood. The baby doesn’t seem to be bleeding any more but her belly looks big! Again I’ve never seen a chic this young so no idea what is normal.

Can you turn off the red light and take a clear picture of where it was bleeding from?

Pick each maggot off with tweezers.

Are the others all doing well? It is hard to see what is going on in the picture, and it sounds pretty grave. Try to remove the maggots you can see, and keep it warm. Getting it wet to drown the maggots would most likely kill it. So I think removing them, and seeing if the chick perks up with some sugar water or electrolytes may be what you can do for now. At any point if you think it should be put down, it might save it from suffering.

So upon google investigation I’m pretty sure newly hatched chic has flystrike. Any chance of survival?
