So this chick started to make an external pip last night. It made a little progress but nothing has changed. Egg chopped off, but looks like membrane is still intact. I just candled it and the air cell doesn't look like it pipped the air cell. So is it is in the wrong position? I don't see any movement either but a decent sized air cell.

What to do? Leave it for longer? Everything says to wait 18 hours. It has been about 15 hours and no progress at all which is why I candled it.

That external pip sure looks to be in the wrong place, assuming the air cell is at the large end where it is supposed to be. From the pic, it looks like there is a small hole in the membrane, but I don't think that is enough for it to breath. At this point, I would be assisting. Have you read the articles on assisted hatching?

Yes, I have read it, but it's a bit confusing. Should I just chip at the same place where it is already? This is my first time incubating and hatching. We have three healthy ones that have hatched.

i incubated 6 and they did not survive so wen i opend them up to see why they did not hatch they looked like the did not devlop much

It looks pretty big and it was peeping last night. Off to investigate and see what we can do. Getting my husband to help me with this one.

I would start with chipping away enough to see the beak and see if it is breathing. Then as long as there is no bleeding, I would continue chipping away until the chick can break itself out the rest of the way or until it is out. I would stop right away if I see the yolk sac is not absorbed and return the chick to the incubator.
