We've used tires as nest boxes, and the hens really seemed to like them. More than one could be in at a time. We also had a 50 gallon plastic barrel that we had a square cut out on one end. We had used it as a dog house, but put it in the hen house and it quickly became the favorite. I had 3 broodies in there at one time, and it hatched out two sets of babies.
This time, my hubby built 9 wooden nest boxes into the wall of the hen house with outside access so we don't have to go inside to gather eggs, and it's proving to be SO much better.
