Help! Pasty Butt

Well there's good and bad news. One dying chick this am....so pasted up that I just let her be until she died.

The other 3 are hanging in there. I think things are loosening up and was able to express a surprising amount of poo from their little hineys. The are all eating both food and sand and drinking. It's been very rainy here and it's cooled off quite a bit so I put the heat lamp on and I think that's helping, too. There's one that I'm not sure about but I feel like I can take a sigh of relief.

No they need the heat if they are only 6 days just be sure to monitor the temps in the brooder, and watch them if they are huddled under the light it's to cold if they are off in the corners too hot but if they are just running around doing chick things then it's Just right. It's 95* for first week and 5 degrees off of that each week after so at 6 days it should be 90 in the brooder.

Thanks alot Miss Lydia.......I'll keep an eye on it. When they first went out to the garage, it was over 90 but then it got cooler and I'm wondering if the too cool temp was the cause of all the butt trouble? It still amazes me that chicken keeping has been so complicated. I've had almost every trouble you can think of since starting out a year ago. I'm going to write a book called Baptism by Fire!

I'm sure everyone of us on here could add a chapter to your book, one thing for sure is we've all had our trials at keeping chickens. But well worth it. As far as the cooler temps that could be, I have never hatched chicks except with a broody so I haven't had to deal with pasting, I hope your on the right track now and they all will go in the right direction from here out. Keep us updated..

Well everyone is still here....one much better, pooping OK. One is pooping but mushy, sticking to butt and I still have to express alot of poop out. Last little runt is not as bad.....squeezed out an unbelievable amount of poop.....hoping they are on the mend. All are eating and drinking, at least nothing is hard and impacted. How long does it take to resolve? This is day 4!

Lost another araucana chick to pasty butt last night. She was my little runt, had a rough hatch....in her shell upside down. She battled for a week and I just couldn't get her fixed. Had her in a basket with a heating pad in the house cause her sisters were stepping all over her. My Shih-Tzu, Harley who loves his chickens sat by her all night and then climbed in the basket and started licking her, so gently. Then with a very soft mouth he tried to pick her up. It was amazing....never saw anything like it. My remaining 2 chicks seem to have turned the corner today and it's the first time I've relaxed all week! Many thanks to all for love, support and suggestions. As always....you are all awesome!
