My little Yorkie got sick and i had to take him to the vet last week, he told me that J.R. had some kind of pigeon disease. I told him i did not have pigeons but i did have chickens, he didn't seem to think that my chickens caused the problem. He said it was from pigeon droppings. Has any one else heard of dogs getting sick from birds and what did you do

What was it? Was it histoplasmosis? If so, other birds can also carry it. Here blackbirds are a common carrier. If I'm remembering right it is a fungal disease.

that sounds like what he called it but i was so scared i really didn't know what it was. I have 2 other dogs and a cat will it harm them and what about my chickens, they are laying and are so pretty, i don't want to have to get rid of them. they are inside a fence with the top covered over to keep the hawks out. They never get out,but i keep plenty of hay on the ground for them. they like that.

Don't worry yet. Just call tomorrow and get the name of the ailment/illness and it can be researched from there.....

It started out like kennel cough which is what the vet treated him for them it went into what i would call a very bad cold, he keeps snorting like he can't breath well and doesn't eat like he used to. Last wed. the vet took some blood and his white blood count was 22000, and then he took a vile to send to the tn dept of agriculture. the results should be back to day or tomorrow.right now we're treating him with very strong antibiotic's.

I'd wait on the test results if it were me. The drugs used on some of the more serious problems can be hard on some of the internal organs. JMO.

Keep us posted and I hope everything works out well.

vet called this morning, and it was negative for pigeon disease, but since he is still coughing and wheezing he is going to keep him on Baytril for another 7 days and rerun the blood work, He said J.R. was probable contagious, which is bad since i have 2 other dogs, am babysitting my GD great Dane and my dau raises mini pins next door. we over run with dogs in our family.

At least his test was negative. Baytril is a good drug, used alot in dogs for those harder to deal with problems. Just keep an eye on the others and maybe they won't come down with it. Hope you baby recovers soon.
