I had one baby survive a difficult hatch under two different chickens. Long story, but it's a miracle he survived. I had to assist with the hatch. His yolk sac fully absorbed, and I used tiny bit betadine on the irritated looking navel. He is very small although he eats and drinks well. Have him on game starter. He's with 3 buff orpington chicks so he would not be alone. Every day I have to clean pasty butt which seems to get stuck from the enlarged, hard navel area. It's dark, bruised looking. Since this is lingering should I give him a shot? We have just about everything from LA 200, Excede, penicillin. It's seems like it's a little bigger, but I'm not sure. He's two weeks old. Please let me know what to do for him. Thanks. I have put Nolvasan on it.

I forgot to mention, it has a hard, dry scab about the size of a dime. Once they reach a certain age are they out of the woods? If he's survived this long is there a good chance he will survive?

I've not had one with a scab like that but most chicks I've had with omphalitis don't live past a week or 10 days. And they usually aren't interested in food or water. So your keet is doing good. Let's hope he keeps it up!

I had one of my slate turkeys this year have a funky navel, and learned tons about omphalitis along the way. I fixed my little guy with careful cleansing of the belly with warm water and cut away any dried umbilical (make sure it's dry and crunchy, if not leave it alone.) Then I found another BYC'er that successfully used Vetericyn spray and used that. Vetericyn spray can be found at any feed/farm store and is really amazing stuff.

I just sprayed his umbilical area twice daily after cleaning and three days later I couldn't tell you where the original problem was, amazing stuff and always in the vet box from now on!
