I do not think it is a squirrel. They have pretty noticeable and more developed claws even at a young age: http://www.flickr.com/photos/24772411@N06/2604646334/
If the pigmentation was already coming in, I'd expect to see some claws. I'd also expect to see smaller, low set ears.
Definitely isn't a domesticated rat or mouse as helpful as that is. XD
Whatever you have, point of interest is the dark band by the rear joint. Pigment clues like that will help ID. I'll poke around some. It also looks exactly like this guy who was not IDed: http://www.thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18941

What a cute little mouse you have Red! I had 4 and I know they were mice, looked just like yours. I tried feeding them, but I couldn't save them. I mixed up goat's milk, and some other things, that were recommended for mice, but they died in about 3 days. They were looking good too, and eating great.

LOL! Well... i'd want a rat as PET before a mouse... they say they have better personalities..
BUT a WILD rat in my house.... eeeek!! Those things eat off peoples toes and stuff while their sleeping....
And they carry the black plague...
I don't know about eating toes off sleeping people, but squirrels actually carry the plague. At least they do out west. Technically, it's the fleas that infest the squirrels or rats that carry the plague.
I didn't know that. I have raised 4 squirrels, and it was a blast. They are so easy to feed and take care of. Thriving little guys and take regular milk. I think that is the only wild animal that can tolerate cow's milk. I could be wrong.
EDIT:
The strong white belly also made me think mouse as opposed to other species, and I think it is some kind of mouse.
The only rodent species I could find listed for your state that has a dark pigment marking as both a spot on the front leg AND a dark band around the heel joint of the rear leg, a pink nose, and white whiskers are deer mice (you have two species). They do nest in attics. The deer mouse can be a carrier of hantavirus, but the way it is spread to humans is by inhaling dust that contains dried urine or feces. So, this little guy isn't really a concern, more any possible deer mice you might have nesting in the attic. I am not at all positive on the ID, and would not freak out about that at all. Just get your attic checked out by pest control as that makes great conditions for any spread of disease for pretty much any species that accumulates in large numbers up there. Both dry and dusty and moist.
Since your guy is looking thin and dehydrated in that first photo which is probably making his snout look long, I think a plumped out version may look similar to this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/corvid01/3881004918/
I couldn't find anything that has pigmentation around the lips though like it looks like yours does. Again, may be completely wrong on the ID.
I hand raised a baby kitten found tangled in the insulation in the crawl space under my house.....very young with umbilical cord still attached. After each feeding I stimulated it to eliminate (go to the bathroom) by gently wiping its rear with a warm damp cotton ball.....a paper towel would likely work as well. Warm and damp to simulate the mother's tongue. Just wipe gently until it goes....a little drop or two most of the time. If you don't stimulate them to go after feeding they will get backed up and die. Good luck with the little guy. Hope he makes it.
Just wanted to stop by and show you something about squirrels in attics/eaves....
Read Nests, Mating, And in Attic/eaves.... paragraphs. Interesting point: if you shut mom out when you find the place she's entering the house...she'll make more of a mess trying to gnaw in to get her babies...best to leave it for 10 weeks allowing them to grow and leave on thier own and then shut off point to entry...they show a neat contraption to do this with a screen.
Hey guys!! I wanted to say thanks for all your help!
I am leaning towards mouse now.... i googled videos of feeding baby mice and he is just their size.... i'll see if i can get a video of me feeding him uploaded...(i'm having a hard time getting it to work)
I WISH it were a squirrel though...
