very happy/relieved to hear about her surgery

I just read all nine pages and almost cried at one point. It is AMAZING what we learn about ourselves when put to the test of our pets and kids. And with chickens they feel like one and the same. Thank you for sharing your experience and for being brave!

I'm so glad that your surgery was successful and you had a happy ending. I'm concerned that she's back in the hospital cage again...keep an eye on her for the next egg! (duh, I know)
I had a RIR who went eggbound on her first egg and she didn't make it. The story is very similar to yours but the egg wasn't out nearly as much as yours and when we cracked and drained it, the whole empty shell got sucked back up inside her and we had to put her down. I think that the egg adhered to the reproductive tract at some point.
