I had to cull a hen that was struggling with vent gleet for quite a while. At least that’s what I thought.
I did Epsom salt baths, gave suppositories orally that are usually for female yeast infections. I tried creams and did a 3 day Epsom salt flush. Nothing worked.
Now I have another hen with the same problem so I want to be on top of it.
Currently I’m starting with medistatin orally. I mix the powder with water.

In my last thread someone said that it might be a problem if the reproductive organs and not vent gleet. Something like salpingitis.
I have a few questions, but any input is very welcome.
1. Could the rooster be sick and give this to the hen? He looks and acts normal
2. I heard about trying copper sulfate in the water. Should this be given to the whole flock or just the infected hen?
I do have a few 4 week old chicks running around with the group too.

Thanks!

That doesn't look like pictures I've seen of vent gleet. I haven't personally dealt with it.

I did have a hen with salpingitis and caught other chickens trying to eat the lash material. I treated the whole flock with acidified copper sulfate. 1/4 tsp per gallon of water for 7-10 days. No other water source. It did help clear up some crop issues. It is also effective for e coli infections. None of my other hens got sick and my hen with salpingitis recovered. I did catch it very early.

Can you post all of the symptoms you are seeing?

The hen is still active with the flock but does stay mostly by herself. She does eat and drink. It’s the same how the other one started. She’s a RIR and a good layer normally.
At the moment she doesn’t lay but practically none of the hens do. Fall/molting, nothing unusual

I read in Gale Damerow’s Chicken Health book that sometimes grain ingredients in feed can cause symptoms like that, however, I have no idea what to do about that but those of us who feed commercial feed.
I had more of an issue with that on Leyena than I do on Nutrena.
Why I don’t really know.

Thanks. I’m a big fan of Gale. I free range and my hens mostly eat my own mix of feed that I ferment. I’ve done this for years.

It just looks like poop stuck to feathers.. many hens will need a clean up.. Either they don't squat far enough or something to that effect. Some hens need help once or twice per year. some will get the build up right away again.. if it's leaving poop on eggs regularly and cannot be resolved through bathing or trimming then it's cause for culling here.. but most often it is not a major problem and also not contagious.

Salpingitis is internal and the only real symptom would be what we refer to as lash eggs.. which is actually puss. Examples seen in the following link..

Yeast infection is curd. Its probably entrobacter which is a major bain because if they step in it it passes on to them and everyone and the dog. I use enroflaxin for fish and fluconzole blue and white capsules 4 fish. Takes at least a month if its in the shell gland or 2 weeks
