Yesterday, I found my hen had something large and bright red hanging from here rear end. It turned out that she had a prolapsed vent and the prolapse had a large hard shelled egg hanging in it. After much consulting soaking, and trials to gently push the prolapse back inside and also to try and find an opening to try to ease the egg out, nothing was successful. I cleaned the area well and with a sterile blade made a small incision in the thinnest area of the stretched tissue and collapsed the egg and removed all of it. Since then I have soaked her, applied antibiotic ointment and honey. I kept her in a dark area with only water for 24 hours. I occasionally would check on her, clean her again , and try to push the prolapse back in. Still no success. Now it looks necrotic and horrible. Is there any hope ???

Sorry about your hen. Has she been pooping since you got the egg out? Have you offered her any food, and is she drinking the water? I might go ahead and soak her once a day in warm Epsom salts or water with Betadine or Chlorhexidene. Try to gently wash the necrotic area to help remove some of it. Then apply plain Neosporin ointment twice a day. Keep the prolapse moist with the ointment until you can push it back inside.
